Hello world! Just bought the game!

Splattzilla
So after watching my friend stream ESO on his twitch channel I've been finally convinced that I need to jump into the action and join the new "meta" or so to say of MMOs that my friends play. The game overall just looks beautiful and I've been an Elder Scrolls fan since Oblivion. What really caught my attention was the combat and most of all the Alliance versus Alliance. My client is still in the process of patching the game files so I've been soaking up all the useful information from the forums that I possibly can. Which leads me to ask the community of any useful tips for starting out in this new world of Tamriel? Will I be able to communicate and group up with my friends regardless of my characters alliance, race, or megaserver? Since I've come from a long line of assuming a tank or leadership roll, which class or professions do you recommend in ESO? I've taken note of the holy trinity being brought back, what would best fit my needs if I get a tickle to go dedicated group healer? I have quite a few more hours until my client is even playable so some of these questions I may have answered myself via forums but always appreciate that sweet nectar which is only obtainable from the community.
If you recognize my forum name then don't think twice about sending a friendly message to say hello. I recently came from the world of Tyria and the Tarnished Coast server provided by ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2. Also was a part of hardcore raiding guilds in both WoW and Everquest(IKR? lol). Look forward to adventuring with you all and may your travels prove fruitful!
To succeed you must do the things that you think you cannot.

You'll want to be on the same faction if you intend to group with them, but you can communicate via account tells (or being in the same guild as them) regardless.

If you truly want to be a dedicated healer, Templar gives you the most healing options but any of the classes can heal (as resto staff is the primary weapon for all).

The megaservers are separate, you need to be on the same as your friends. To play with them (as opposed to against them) you also need to be playing the same alliance(tho you will be able to talk to eachother even if you are on other alliances, as guilds can cross alliance boundaries).

When you exit the prison and arrive in tamriel, make sure you take the first quest you run into - it will direct you to the 'newbie islands' - good xp there, free skillpoints, and not so much competition for material harvesting.

As for the trinity - it's there, but with a twist. You can certainly become a dedicated tank, but what class you choose for it does not matter. All classes can fill all roles if specced/equipped for it. So i suggest checking up a character creator and reading on the skills the classes have: http://esobuild.com/

Welcome. As others said, be on the same megaserver and in the same alliance as your friends. Don't skip the starter island and in the early zones try to hit every quest in the zone so you don't hit a brick wall of being underleveled as you progress. Craft gear alongside your leveling, the crafted stuff is plenty good to quest with and you will likely not get enough drops or quest rewards to keep your gear at your level without crafting. Don't buy gear from vendors, it is a huge waste of gold that you will want later for bag/bank space.

    Have fun.

The most important advice I can suggest is to not be afraid to explore. Go off the beaten path, you'll be rewarded (literally, more harvesting nodes, and more treasure chests). I see a lot of players treating this like the standard themepark "get x quest and go to y location, do not stray from the set path" mindset, and I feel they miss out on quite a bit that makes this game so special.

I'd recommend running the in-town quests for some quick cash and gear, plus if you got a version with a mount, you'll only find the stable master in the starter town and none on the island.

Then hit the starter island as a level 4-5. Also, I don't see this going on, but if you might be able to get free *crafted* armor from folks if you ask nicely while standing near the armor creation center of your choice (near a blacksmith for heavy, near a clothing station for leather/cloth). However, leather might be a miss as this seems to be a bit of a PIA to harvest atm vs the iron and jute *** going on.

Dont pass on starter islands-after you complete intro(prison) you will be in your faction first town. Go to docks(easy to find on map) and look for ship which can take you back to starter islands. They are fun to play, have easier and lower level enemies, also some skyshards(3 shards=1 skill point for you to spend).

Dont rush and try do all quests possible, explore as much as you can, otherwise you will find yourself on next map with orange quests and huge repair bills after several deaths. Quests can be often started from are drops, books, or other items in locations, so exploring is a good thing. Also give you experience, and even more skyshards.

And most important, have fun while playing. Welcome :)

Explore. Take up crafting. It's the easiest way to keep your weapons and armor on level and in good shape.

The trinity isn't so simple... Any class can tank or heal, some fall into a specific role easier than others, but in the end you can make each of them work. This is because tools typically aren't class-specific: anyone can use a restoration staff or heavy armor and shield. The fun is in thinking about complementary skills to make it all tick.

Let's take tanks: dragonknights are the most straightforward and get tanking skills early on. But surprisingly, sorcerers have good CC and bound armor, so they make great battlemage type tanks.

Similarly, templars look like the obvious healers due to their class tree and quick direct heals. On paper, they have the most healing options. But again, other classes can grab a resto staff for AoE heals and make use of different interesting tools: sorcerer's magicka regen passives or nightblade stealth synergies. A healer who can hide in shadows is quite useful in a game where you can't rely on your tank to keep all aggro and everyone needs to always be ready to dodge or interrupt.

So take a look at the build site linked above and experiment!

All this advice is good, there is a lot to do if you look around and take your time. One thing I might add is search out the Sky shards. There are 6 located in the starting areas alone that will give you easy skill points. 3 Skyshards =1 skill point.

LootDrop is a must if you autoloot. I also use Inventory Item Borders, Research Assistant and some other mod for research time tracking, don't remember the name. I wouldn't be using them if I wasn't a dedicated crafter though.
ESOHead Markers is good for tracking nodes you previously harvested, but it kills exploration for me because it shows uncollected skyshards. They can presumably be filtered off, I'll have to look into it.

Take a look at Wykkyd's mods, especially Outfitter. And well, Foundry Tactical Combat if you like numbers floating everywhere and icons cluttering your screen... Ok, I admit I'm biased, I love ESO's trimmed down HUD. But FTC is quite popular.

Welcome to TESO, I recommend you these addons:

Foundry Tactical Combat: Great damage showing per skill, buff showing and nice look of the HUD.

Inventory Grid Viewer: It's great to check all your inventory in one sight.

Lootdrop Continued: If you've got autoloot option, with this one you can see what you're looting.
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity...

The best way to start is DO QUESTS! The so called starter islands no longer exist but have been upgraded to regular low level quests. (I kind of miss the old starter quests. LOL) Always pick the lowest level quest in your journal to get the most benefit. Talk to everyone to get quests, explore, talk to everyone.

Do not waste gold on gear. Be careful what you buy, sellers sell at 1000% profit.

When you reach level 10 go to Cyrodil and do scouting runs, kill players runs, and group activities to take farm, mines, mills, and forts. Here is where you get mail containing gear up to your level. This is the only way to level up your gear early in the game and keep it up to level. You also get alliance money which can be spent on pretty good supplies and siege goods.

If you get stuck, try /reloadui, if that doesn't work, try /stuck, if that doesn't work, try quitting the game and then PLAY again.

    Hope this helps.

do what others have said and do the starting island, do not wait to do them..and above all do not treat this game like a standard MMO...explore, explore explore, and one more thing...explore. dont go from point A to point B. and just a Tip...the best armor and weapons in game come from crafting...

Ah, personally I explore and do quests as I find them. Yesterday I decided to go fishing (for cash and achievements) and I went on looking for fishing holes. on the way I gathered, killed stuff, looked for chests and did the odd quest I found.
I find this way of playing more fun and less tedious (quest running gets old after a while)
