New to RP, want to get into it. Ebonheart EU

I'm Jack Armstrong, a Nord fighting for the Ebonheart Pact. I'm based in the UK looking for a RP guild to fight alongside and get to know.

Like everyone else, I've been working on my crafting a fair bit, but now that I'm making items over 10 levels higher than I can use, I'm giving it a break and just questing. Unless people want items made of course, thats half the reason I've been training it, can't fight a war without weapons.

Just saying, but crafting is irrelevant when it comes to role play. You could have just said you're taking the role of a blacksmith.

That's why New to RP is the first thing I put up. I don't know this stuff, but it seems to me like thats the same thing.

Role playing and playing an RPG are two different things. If you want to learn about role play, look up the following definitions:

• In character
• Out of character
• Metagame
• Powergame
• /me

Just had a look at them, even new to it I'd assume that's common knowledge? I haven't done this before and even I knew that. That's the point of what I'm after.

Those are the most basic things you need to know before you step into a role playing experience.

Basically, I think that what Wuss is saying is that from your post it looks like you are mistaking your toon for yourself.
RPing is like being an actor and the character you are going to interprete is your toon, likely a completely different person from you. Best example could be: a male player playing a female toon. You must dive yourself into your character psychology, tastes, ideas, beliefs, etc...
Also, you can see your toon as a puppet, and yourself as the puppeteer. Not only about how you do PvE, but how you speak (post, actually - only on /s, /e and /y - every other channel is not RP, Out Of Character as Wuss would say )
That's the very basics
Along the road you'll stumble upon many more weird definitions such as 'auto', 'meta', 'god mode' (or 'gm'), 'overpowering' (or 'op') and so on.
IMO, the most important to learn is 'meta': META is using OOC info for RP purposes. Classic example: *you* know other toons names, because you can read them on screen, but your toon doesn't see the GUI! He sees a world. So calling a toon by name before he introduces himself is META.

Mind me asking what you mean by 'auto'? I checked the rest of them but can't find a definition for that one.

Personally, I want to know what 'auto' means as well.

'Auto' is a term used generally by freestylers and text-fighters (which I am).
Text fight is kinda having PvP just using emotes
You describe your toon's action to defend or attack, instead of hitting compulsively the keyboard like in standard PvP.
It is turn based (one post each) and follows some rules, the most important of whom is about auto.
In this context, auto is a short for 'auto-hit'.

This is an auto:
X twirls his sword and hits Y at the chest

That's a valid post (even if short) in a text fight:
X twirls his sword and tries to hit Y at his chest

Now, this is a poor post, it lacks many information and it doesn't actually describe what X is doing to Y (direction of the blow, power in it, possible damages to Y...) so don't take it a an example of good text fight because it is not. Anyways, it is valid.
The difference is all about this: in the 1st post I stated that X actually hits Y, without giving him any chance to react.
In the second, I used a conditional form (I used 'try to...', but could've said 'aiming at Y's chest') hence giving Y the chance to repost.

So auto is referring to the assumption that the action you attempt happens, and not that it has a chance to fail/taking any external factors other than your own character into account?

Yes, precisely. You must always give a chance to the opponent to react in some ways.
Actually, the good text fighter is not the one who wins more duels, but who understands when his toon can't escape the attack and takes the damages.

About taking external factors into account... well, start with the basics .
It is certainly right to consider them - your toon may be under some spell effect (blind, as an example), or having the sun straight in his eyes, or whatever you can fancy -, but at the beginning just focus on simple things.

If interested on text fighting, I suggest u two things.
First, google for it. 'Text fight RP' should work. There's a lot of literacy about it since it's a form of RP that can be done even on communicators (Skype), chat lines, or even forums - so it's around since before MMOs.
This is a post of the guild I'm in in... a different game . It is synthetic, but covers many aspects of text fight.

Then, ask in general if there's someone willing to duel you for training. State you're new to it, anyways.
