ESO is a splendid game, which will always have a niche audience drawn to the TES universe. And this MMO offers the opportunity to explore all of Tamriel with friends in the Second Era.
Now, I'm going to address the real point that prompted me to write this article: the authenticity of the regions.
The regions of the base game are interesting. But when you look at the structures, whether it's forts, houses, cities... they all have exactly the same architectural style. In any case, each race had a unique architectural style... Except perhaps the Imperials (the Nibenese style visible in Anvil, the Second Empire style visible in Arenthia, and the Colovian style visible in the settlements built by the Colovians).
A few examples:
- Elsweyr: We have Dune, which has the Khajiit architectural style from the base game. But Northern Elsweyr has its own visual identity, which is a good thing. Southern Elsweyr also has its own visual identity. It's roughly the same as Northern Elsweyr, but there's an effort to differentiate them.
- High Rock: The region suffers... We can already mention the absence of Direnni structures (probably replaced by the Ayleid style, basically whatever was available at launch). But above all, there's this omnipresent Breton style... making all the regions of High Rock extremely monotonous. I even struggle to justify it as: "it's a new architectural style that spread because we had to rebuild our kingdom after Durcorach's horde swept through."
The regions of the base game are monotonous in terms of human/elven constructions. The Chapters brought new, unique, and highly distinctive structures to the regions where they appeared, creating new varieties of buildings for the different races.
But now that the expansions have covered a good majority of Tamriel's regions and races, I'm afraid Tenmar will end up looking the same as Northern or Southern Elsweyr.
I'm afraid Nibenay will have the same houses as Blackwood (aside from the fort walls, which are a common Imperial style).
I hope we don't see Morthal's architectural style repeated in other Skyrim cities we haven't seen yet...
In fact, I'm afraid the new regions will become monotonous as well, because the cities will look like... well, we've seen it all before.
