I’m an Elder Scrolls Online player using macOS on an Apple M-series processor (currently M3). As many of you know, the Mac version of ESO is still built natively only for Intel processors, which means that Apple Silicon users must run the game through Rosetta 2. While this makes ESO playable, it also comes with several issues specific to the M-series architecture.
Current Problems Running ESO on Apple Silicon:
Lower performance than expected from Apple M chips — FPS can be unstable and the CPU/GPU aren’t fully utilized.
Higher system load, leading to noticeably increased power consumption and higher temperatures, especially on MacBooks.
Random FPS drops and micro-stutters, particularly in crowded cities or during PvP battles.
Graphical issues, especially when using higher settings or certain visual effects.
Lack of support for native Apple technologies, such as Metal optimized for ARM, preventing the game from using the full power of Apple Silicon GPUs.
Benefits of a Native Apple Silicon Version:
Significant performance boost — these chips are extremely capable when software is compiled natively.
More stable FPS and overall smoother gameplay, especially during large-scale encounters.
Lower power usage and reduced heat, which is crucial for laptop players.
Improved graphics and responsiveness thanks to Metal and other modern macOS APIs.
Future-proofing the macOS version — Apple is phasing out Intel support, and Rosetta will not be available forever.
Are there any official steps toward a native version?
Unfortunately, based on the information available today, there are no confirmed plans from ZeniMax Online Studios for a native Apple Silicon build of ESO.
The official support page states that ESO is not officially supported on ARM-based Macs, meaning all M-series machines.
Developer communications in the past mentioned macOS support in general, but never announced an ARM-native version.
Community discussions (forums, Reddit) consistently report performance issues on M-series hardware and note that ZOS has not yet indicated that work on a native build is underway.
Existing workarounds (windowed mode, resolution tweaks, external monitors) are unofficial and do not solve the core problem.
Why this matters
With Apple fully committed to Apple Silicon — and the majority of new Macs running exclusively on M-series processors — it’s more important than ever that ESO receives proper native support. Many modern games have already transitioned to ARM builds with fantastic results. A native version of ESO would not only improve the experience for current Mac players but could also bring in a larger macOS audience.
I hope ZOS considers developing a native Apple Silicon client. It would be a major improvement for gameplay quality and the long-term future of ESO on macOS.
What are your thoughts? Are you experiencing similar issues on your M-series Mac?
