Crafting Motifs

Hey guys !

I just got back to the game with a new character, but I can't find any Crafting Motifs anywhere :/
I'm a Dark Elf, so I can craft Dark Elf stuff, but that's it ... if I remember correctly we could find Crafting Motifs inside crates, drawers and everything, but I'm now lv.14 and I still haven't found a single one.
Maybe it's because I'm in Blackwood, and not in one of the original starting zones ?

Also, I seem to remember that back in the days we could buy a Motif pack in the Crown Shop, with all basic Motifs like High Elf, Wood Elf, Orc, Argonian and everything, but I can't find it any more ?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks !

Look for them on guild traders, these are dirt cheap. Can use https://eu.tamrieltradecentre.com/ to check which shop has them, but most shops would have at least some. Or ask in zone chat, lot of people have extra. Even most guild banks have some for grabs for free.

Just keep looking in any container you'll come across in delves and dungeons, and you'll find some eventually.

You can also steal with no risk of getting caught from places like the 2 ships in the Daggerfall harbour (Hotspur & Lydia) or the top floor of The Bearer's Rest Inn in Fargrave. The ships wil reset after a visit to the nearby outlaw's refuge, the Inn will reset as soon as you walk out of the door. I found a lot of motifs that way, especially in the Inn. You don't even have to launder the motifs to learn them.

Then there are many motifs you'll only get as a reward for doing daily zone or guild quests, doing specific dungeons of from treasure maps.

The UESP-wiki has a good list of motifs and how to get them.

It's probably also a good idea to join a starter-friendly guild. Many of them let you take recipes and motifs out of the guild bank, or share their exces stuff through guild chat.

get a good starter guild and they will more than likely have stacks of these things to give you. they -can- drop from the not-starter zones, but usually does not happen until you don't need (and don't WANT) them anymore. because they are worth so little on the traders, a lot of us won't bother taking up a slot for that. you could probably also ask in zone and find ppl who will be thankful to free up some inventory space to give them away

Thanks for all those advice guys, it's really helpful !!

That actually reminds me of another question : I did try to use some Guild Traders to find my Motifs, but I must be missing something somewhere, because they always look empty to me...

Is there a special key I need to press after doing a search in the Guild Trader window ?
Or am I just really dumb ? :p

Youre not dumb. Yes, you have to look through the list on the side to see what category your item is in, and then press R to show the items available. Motifs are under consumables, and if one guild trader doesnt have anything, just go to another.

Edit: you can also type in the search bar what you're looking for and press R to search that as well. Really just have to write "Motif" and press search and they'll all come up.

For the playable race motifs (#1-#9) and the four rare ones (#11-#14), leave no container unlooted, especially "steal from" containers. I don't know if this was intentional on the part of the devs or just the way my luck is running, but I probably get twice as many playable race motifs from stealing as I do from regular looting. Imperial (#10) is a very rare drop and I probably pick up one or maybe two in a year.

You can pick up all of those on guild traders with playable race motifs being dirt cheap and Imperial being pretty expensive. You could also just ask. I don't bother selling because they aren't worth much, so I've got a dozen or two of each eating up slots in a chest.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

Thanks @freespirit , I have received all your Motifs, and ... woah, there was a lot <3
Maybe just one last question : to use some of those Motifs I need to be lv.7 or 9 in crafting, for now my highest is Woodworking lv.5, what would you say would be the fastest way to level up a crafting skill ?

And thanks to everyone else in this thread, now I know how to search the Guild Traders, it's also useful for my Provisioning crafting !

Daily writs. Get the certification, ideally in Summerset because th masters all are at the same place in Alinor.
Afterwards, daily writs grant you crafting skills XP, materials and intricate items to deconstruct for more XP.

Also if you have a bit of gold you can buy intricate traited items at Guild Traders. The intricate trait gives more crafting inspiration when the item is deconstructed and therefore levels that craft faster.

Typically these items are fairly cheap to buy and you can search specifically for them at Guild Traders. To get the ability to use those four motifs I sent I would pick one craft and just buy intricate items for that craft..... if Woodwork is your highest by a fair amount then buy those items. 🙂
