why when you set a quest active do you need to leave town now before you can see where to go on map

i have been levelling sub class and doing stuff in zones and now any quests i seem to set active if i am in a town it sets the town exit to where i go and only then does it show me where to go. the quest is silent bell in fort colovia but while in skingrad in a building it shows me its in that building. when i go outside it shows me the exit of town. i know where to go as i missed part of quest but it shows me to exit town then it shows me where to go. a friend was in sunhold she had a quest in malabal tor set as active after she did sunhold but it kept showing her that sunhold was the place to go. A really big white arrow on the sunhold door as i thought she had missed part of the quest and sends her to a room with nothing to do in it.I am also getting shown to go to the travellers in main cities to do the quest. please just show the locations and not keep showing me to npc to let me travel some where i have a wayshrine and dont need those npc. Also quests were you can talk to an npc for more info but you have done same repeatable quest loads does it show you the npc loction to talk to and will not show you on map the actiual place till you get out of town and turned all addons and libs off and is still the same

I don't know if this is a bug or just how it was set up to work, but I agree that this needs to be corrected.

When I open a quest and choose to show the location of where I need to go, I want to see the location of where I need to go. But instead it shows the door to leave town, or the door to go into town, or a caravan or a ship. I followed this path once and it took me all over Tamriel. I don't think I ever got to my destination that way.

The quest knows where we need to go. Why can't choosing location actually show the location?

So this is true for a lot of the DLC zones- I think it started with Greymoor? But someone can correct me if I'm not remembering correctly. But basically they started making the main city in the zone into its own instance. I assume for performance reasons. But a side-effect is that it definitely messes up the quest markers until you leave the city and port to some other part of the zone.

I don't understand why being in town would not allow show location to show the actual location no matter where it is. Show location should show the location.

As far as I know, this has always been the case if you're in a location that has its own map. If the quest objective is for some other area which isn't shown on the current default map, the quest pointer will be placed on some exit, wayshrine, or form of transportation such as a boat or cart or horse. This isn't something new; it's been like that ever since I first started playing the game back in 2017.

I know and I asked a long time ago for them to please change it so show location really shows the location.

If you go to the map and click on the quest, it will usually show you the actual location, but even that is hit and miss.

I need to know where the location is before I can click on the quest on the map. If it is in a different zone than the one I am in when I get the quest then I don't know where to go.

Southern Elsweyr (Released October 21st, 2019 for PC/Mac and November 5th, 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One) was the last city to be released that is not its own instance anymore and when this trouble started.

Southern Elsweyr basically made console almost unplayable for almost two months after release until they fixed something. Since then, every major city has had its own instance.

    Stay safe :)

For master crafting quests, some of the locations don't get marked with a pin because they're either underground or inside a building.
I need to know where the location is before I can click on the quest on the map. If it is in a different zone than the one I am in when I get the quest then I don't know where to go.

It is indeed annoying. Practically speaking, the choices are either leave town and then check the location. or look it up on-line.

thanks so i am not alone so it is just the dlc zones i had a load of quests in the rift and they are all fine so will just level in base game areas. i hated high isle that the daily repeatable quests would not say where to go just send you to an npc then if it was on other isle if you go out of town it showed the start area on next map and when you got there it showed the location then. so thank you all for finding this really annoying and not just me getting annoyed at why i cannot just see where to go

The cities are still located in the same instance as the rest of the Overland Zone (which is why zonechat works properly in all post-Greymoor Zones). It's just that the city "interiors" are placed out of bounds of the main playable area, like Gonfalon Bay's interior is visible southeast of High Isle (and has a mysterious little island visible on the Tamriel map), Necrom's is east of the Telvanni Peninsula and Skingrad is barely visible north of Varen's Watch on the West Weald map:

Another way to see the actual location, is to look at the map when your group members fast travel between the Overland and the cities, as you can see their icons actually moving there before they get corrected.

The location we are wanting to see is the location of the quest objective. When a quest says something like "Go gather these items in a far away land" and we choose to show location it doesn't. It only shows the way out of town or out of the zone.

Right. It seems people are trying to use the excuse that cities are instanced now and that’s why quests point us to the door instead of to the actual quest location. But if that’s true, why doesn’t that happen when I’m inside my house? We shouldn’t have to leave the city to see where the quest needs us to go. It’s an annoying extra step and extra loading screen.

if its a base game the quest is in or before elsweyr or blackwood its fine but after that those areas like necrom high isle west weald all send you to the gate before it shows you the quest location if you are in capitol of high isle or west weald say. if you get a world boss daily in those zones select the quest and then press m to show on map and see where it sends you

I know. That’s what I’m complaining about. I’m saying that people have said the newer cities are “instanced” and that’s why it shows us the city door/gate we’re in instead of where the quest actually is. But if that’s true, why doesn’t the same happen when I’m in a house? Houses are instanced but they’ll still allow quests to show the correct location on the map. So this talk of cities being instanced can’t be the reason. It needs to be fixed.

Yea this has always felt bad. Not sure why this has never been corrected. Same with dismounting in water or going under bridge awnings sometimes.

Would've thought minor stuff like this would've been fixed when we started doing Q3 QOL updates, but here we are.
