That is completely terrible at this? I've tried all three factions and am currently ploughing through the Aldmeri dominion storyline as a khajiit , but I had to abandon the quest defending the queen from some sorcerer called Norion or something like that, because I really struggle with the controls, hate repetitively bashing 12345 like one of pavlov's dogs, and am useless at finding loot. Most containers I check are empty, the quest rewards meagre, and I have broken every lock pick i have tried to open even a simple chest with. Maybe Zenimax will take pity on people like me, and start up a "hopeless" difficulty level for us, because quite frankly, I am finding this way too hard at present.

What level are you? i did not do that quest till 12 and it was quite easy. Most people blow off the starter island (for AD its kanarthi's roost or something like that) that wll get you to lvl 6-7 then you can do the quests in the town you spawn in and be lvl 10ish before you got to do that quest.

Currently level 8, I abandoned that quest at level 6 to go to Khenarthys roost, I will just have to find more quests in town and level up a couple more times, thanks for the advice.

Sorry to say, it is you. It most certainly isn't that hard in the early levels. ESO is also certainly different to other MMO's...in a good way.

Regarding the repetitively mashing 12345, you can rebind these to other keys that are more comfortable, including binding them to mouse buttons, which is the easiest way of all.

Not sure what's going on with the containers all being empty, I suspect this is a bit of an exaggeration as I find plenty of full containers.

The chests are very simple, but you need to know exactly what you are supposed to do. You hold the mouse button down as the lock moves down and release it the 'moment' it starts to shake 'slightly'. Too early or too late and you will fail. Once you have the feel for it the simple locks are...well....simple

Did you skip the starter island? They let people do that now for some reason, but it really gimps you, especially if you didn't practice the game in beta.

Norion shouldn't be hard at all. I did it on 1st try, even in beta - on both Nightblade and Templar. It helps to have one crowd control ability that many weapons or classes seem to have (like the destro staff knockback, Nightblade root, etc.), too.

Chests are also easy - I've never failed. I did fail a few times back in beta (timers were shorter then), but once you figure out the system you'll be fine, since it ust takes a bit of practice.

Yes, I thought it probably was me. I have played all the other Elder scrolls games, usually on console rather than on my Mac, so I'm not that used to pc/mac games. The last game I played on PC was Morrowind, several years ago. I have found lots of crafting materials and plenty of lorebooks, but as I said, most barrels I check are empty, which seemed unusual. Maybe I should ditch the mac version of the game when the PS4 version comes out. Thanks for the suggestions re opening chests, again I think it's my hamfisted attempts to use a keyboard and mouse that are to blame rather than the game.

I hope it does all "click" for you. Quite a few things are different from the usual elder scrolls games but at the same time different from other MMOs. I am having a blast now, but did take a bit of adjusting.

Hey Sheena -- just want to drop a note to encourage you to mess about a bit longer. I did not come to the table all in awe - bf had to talk me into it, and now I am definitely excited and having fun.

On the note about struggling with the controls, I'll share my experience with you, just a little thing I thought but has made a huge diff in my play time. I basically started doing this about three mmo's ago lol -- CHANGE UP THE CONTROL HOTKEYS!

My hands are fairly small and I have never enjoyed having to reach for the number row anyhow. Now I go into a new mmo - the FIRST thing I do really is to check and see if I can re-mem all my hotkeys/actions/abilities. I look at the mechanics and pick which keys I'm going to use most often - both the ability ones AND the u-i shortcuts. It only 'feels' crazy for the first couple of playtimes and after that your muscle memory clicks in ;o). I put an index card on the wall just at eye level with all my new memmed hotkeys until I no longer need it.

For example - with ESO we only need 5 + the ultimate ability keys. So mine are memmed to w-e-r-t-y and h for my ultimate. I put my auto-run on the z key, my go 'backwards' on the x key, I use my a key to strafe left -- right arrow is strafing right but I usually manueuver very well for kiting etc just strafing in semi- or large full circle patterns. Everything is close and super easy to reach for my left hand on the keyboard and my right hand is almost always in control of my moving around.

Next - the mouse. I use my mouse for MOVEMENT and for free-look ;o). Early on in mmo's I only ever did PvE play; once I started having a blast with PvP I found out definitively for me, using the mouse is amazingly more convenient and provides for faster reaction times for my movement. So my left mouse button is forward movement, right mouse key is for free-look,my first side mouse key is for changing weaps, my middle mouse button is for running faster.

For environment interaction I have f set as my mouse click on items, npc's or loot and g set as my loot all key. I have number key 2 for my Mount up key, and 3,4 and 5 for the siege keys in PvP. *Grins..I am finding I just might like to find another key to utilize for my open map also since I use it so often ;o). The d key is set as my block, with c as crouching/stealth. I have v as my interrupt spells key, and b as my dodge and roll key.

One play period to fiddle around and see which keys are most responsive for YOU, a couple play periods and maybe a mini-chart nearby to refer to til you memorize your key shortcuts and you will be feeling pro or .. at least not fumbling for 'where the heck is that interrupt key..duh, am at the shrine again!'

This is very similar to the same keys I've used in the last few mmo's I've played. I personally only play two console games so I understand how 'fumbly' one can feel without a convenient/familiar hotkey setup. My guy otoh loves console games and wouldn't dream of changing the basic ESO default, he is comfortable with it.

I hope you give the game a bit longer and that you, like me, get so immersed you won't even consider giving your hard-earned subscription fees to another mmo company. If not, best wishes on finding something fun for the upcoming spring and summer months. I'll be here, happily squishing in as much playtime as I can in between college coursework, irl work, sports, family fun, a little sleep here and there and a LOT of gratitude that ESO has been launched and is so spectacular ^-^!

some people say the game is boring easy and others impossibly hard. I think its just a matter of learning. I wasn't so good at first but when I got into my build I find it pretty easy.

Thanks everyone for the input. I will stick with it, at least until the ps4 version comes out, but I can now add cheesemongers hollow and defeating Doshia to the quests I can't yet defeat....good game though.

The thing with Norion is learning how and when to stun (Block/attack). With Doshia it is to pop her healing orbs. With Gutsripper focus on avoiding his charge and tail swipe. I used range effectively on him but it isn't really kiting so much as using the pedestal area you first find him on. Don't pull him too far or he resets. Note also that when he charges and misses he is stunned. He also cannot jump but has to use stairs/ramps.

I was TERRIBLE at the lockpicking game when I did it the first time. Didn't understand the mechanics (still thinking in terms of Skyrim at that point). But now, I'm getting pretty good at it (have only broke one pick thus far). I think that those of us who think the game is easy have a bit of experience with it. I have run into some quests that were impossible for me to complete at the level I attempted them. But once I got a few levels, those quests were much easier. The benefit of a game like this is that you can go anywhere and do anything. If a quest is too difficult, go do something else. Get some levels and gear (even if the quest rewards seem meager, they can be a huge upgrade), then come back and try again.

You can group for that quest by the way. I have to group in order to get past it myself. And no, it is not just you.

If you're having trouble play in third person. The combat cues become much more obvious and you can more easily see what's happening around you. And I say this as someone who greatly prefers first person for immersion - so I switch from one mode to the other when I'm in an area where I need to pay attention.

I was having hard time with the blocking/interrupting at first; to know when you need to do it. And that is an essential part in this game's combat style. So I installed this idiot proof addon that flashes a big red text (the text color etc can be modified in settings tho) in the screen when you need to BLOCK, INTERRUPT or DODGE ( that's when the enemy will do an aoe you should avoid). It also shows when the boss is OFF BALANCE aka stunned so it's easy to put on more dmg at that time cos you know the boss is not gonna hurt you then.

There are some good tips on this thread, but just so you know you are not alone, I found Norion horribly difficult, thankfully a guildmate came to the rescue and helped me with that particular fight (yes, that is possible for that fight). To me, Norion is a lot more difficult than quests marked as a similar level in the other factions.

If I can add a tip, it is to bind 'roll dodge' to your middle mouse button so that you don't have to double-tap a movement key - it is far more fluid, if you are already moving in a particular direction you can tap the middle mouse button to roll that way.

If you do need help feel free to add me and I can help you through pub dungeons or finding skyshards till you get the hang of it. But ultimately, play with the settings that most suits you, so experiment with control bindings, zoom in and out of camera get a new keyboards with some macros if you are clumsy(Though I only recommend buying a new keyboard if you are really into the game).
