A few players I know have emptied their friends lists to remove this spam.

from what i've read about that, it's been abandoned and causes things to crash now.

If you' re on PC, you can use the addon : BestFriends 2018

BestFriends is a simple, no-frills addon that moves friend status (login/logout) notifications from the chat window into the top-right notification area instead, to avoid clogging up your chat.

maybe I'm wrong, but you can turn off system messages in the chat / window channel settings

There must be a way, because I don't get those messages. I think Bandits UI might filter it? That's the only addon I have that I can think of might be doing it for me.

Not using the friends list either for this reason alone. Don't care enough to install addon either.
Guild rosters are the new friends list now. If they add the option I'll use it again.
