Why does body paint override Argonian scale or khajiit furr textures?

Ok, I understand why it is technically so. But again, I don't understand why this was decided to work like that. It should not.

It should just add on top of the texture. When applying a body paint on a khajiit or argonian that body paint texture could just get some transparency to mend better with the underlying scale or furr texture.

yes fur and scale patterns should be another Appearance collection instead of Body Markings.

The weird thing is that at least some head paints actually does overlay the scale pattern of my argonian without overwriting it. The corresponding body paint overwrites it.

How could they manage something on the head but not on the body eludes me

This is actually why I use the one necromancer tattoo skin. It hides vampirism but unlike almost every other skin doesn't completely remove my cat's leopard patterns, only mutes them a bit so he goes from a school-bus yellow to a more sandy tan kind. And since he's a necromancer anyway the tattoos fit regardless.

that's because the fur and scale patterns we choose in Character Creation are Body Markings.
you can collect all of them in the Crown Store Body Markings bundle

Ok, that makes sense. Still it should be possible.

I personally rather prefer to not be able to switch scale or fur pattern in the collection and be able to overlay body paints without overriding the pattern.

See also: the white out "Oracle Eyes" base game cosmetic is listed under the "Facial Hair" category, along with a bunch of random makeup(???) cosmetics from the cash shop. Argonian facial horns? Also "Facial Hair", for some reason. "Facial Hair" apparently also just includes "Miscellaneous". Which is so unintuitive and often strange to cosmetically work around.

Weird glowing eyes/reptile eyes/cat eyes/etc from the cash shop, though, most of those are "Head Markings"(???). Except "Oracle Eyes", of course which is the only weird eye effect militantly tagged under "Facial Hair". Nevermind that weird eye effects probably deserve their own category at this point.

The exclusive Khajiit and Argonian fur/scale textures being lumped in with every other set of "Body Markings" in the game was a dumb decision at launch, and it's only gotten dumber in the decade they've doubled down on it. People would be more excited for their endless padding of crates, for example, with body markings if they didn't ruin a bunch of beastfolk classics in the process.

Their cosmetics systems need an overhaul so badly. It's so dated, janky, and unintuitive.

And don't forget that Bosmer Antlers are also considered "Facial Hair" so they can't use eyelashes or beards at the same time. 🤷‍♀️
