Devs, can we get a step by step simple explanation of how subclassing works

I am seeing tons of conflicting info from ppl on the test server, who won't know how it actually works if they are using templates. Do we need to level up the desired skill lines on alts or not?? What about people that don't have that class on an alt? What is going on? Some clarity is needed.

To the other players, if you don't actually know for 100% sure, please do not reply here with incorrect information about subclassing. There is enough of that all over these forums. I need actual true answers.

Need to own the class to have it. Do not need to have a character of that class.
You must level it up once as a subclass line regardless of whether you've leveled it up as a main line on another character.
The subclass line only needs to be leveled up once accountwide. Its progress is shared accountwide.

So, that is where the confusing part comes in. When Carrie said, "For the first time, class progress is account wide" but she meant SUBCLASS progress apparently but most people, myself included, thought it meant that class progress on alts would carry over to subclassed skill lines.

What you are saying, is that we only have to level the subclassed skill lines ONCE per account? That's reasonable. I mean, many people won't be leveling tank or healer skill lines for subclassing- so they won't have to level 21 class lines if they never plan to use them.

Man this sounds thrilling, I'm so excited to have all my builds ruined and have to take my like 3300 cp characters back to BRP or skyreach or whatnot to level the same old skill lines (at reduced speed!!!!) all over again so I can make the new FOTM frankenbuild and hopefully rejoin my trial group. I hope they can think up something more engaging.

At least with past nerfs and reworks, I could just swap skills and make new gear and get back out there (or at least be grinding out *new* sets or skills in actual *new* content). This seems like nothing more than a forced time-sink that will temporarily gate people from their normal routine with friends and prog groups and guilds, etc., until they do the requisite boring, meaningless grinding. Remember, "engagement" numbers on some chart != happy customers.

Can someone explain what "Abilities are now locked on character level and skill line rank" means?

I will check later and come back and confirm but how understand it is:
Currently, since you have your skill lines when you start, you unlock abilities at skill line rank. So if you're a necro and want to unlock Skeletal Mage you just need to level up the Grave Lord skill line to 30. If you put multiple skills from that skill line on your bar you can unlock that before character level 30.

Because subclass lines are accountwide, your brand new level 3 character can have a level 50 skill line. So now to unlock skills both the line AND the character level need to be at the unlock level. So to unlock Skeletal Mage you need to be level 30 even if your Grave Lord Skill line reaches 30 before you reach level 30.

Edit: Yes, the above is the case. The skill and passive unlocks require character and skill line level to both be at the requirement, so a level 10 character can't have access to top level skill line skills.

Let me understand this please. In order to access other skill lines, you have to have other characters made that already have those skill lines then? Can a level 50 character access the skill lines of a level 20 character?
My level 50 sorcerer is not seeing any other skill lines, do they just appear as an option when you click on subclasses? I do not see an option to remove existing skill points so one can add them to the new skill lines.
    Totally lost.

    ESO Subclassing Requirements and limitations
    - Have one level 50 character.
    - Complete “A Study in Discipline” introductory quest
    - Players must retain one original class skill line; all three cannot be replaced.
    - ESO Subclassing permits the selection of complete skill lines only—individual skills cannot be selected independently from different classes.

How to Change Subclasses Skill Lines
After completing the introductory subclassing quest for the first time, you’ll be able to select your subclass skill lines once for free. Any future changes will require a 1,500 gold fee, similar to standard skill respecs. When changing subclass lines, any spent skill points will be refunded.

    1) Speak to Bahtra in Riften (The Rift), Evermore (Bangkorai), or Dune (Reaper’s March). Cost: 1,500 gold.
    2) Use a Respecification Scroll available in the Crown Store.

Important Note: You cannot change a subclass skill line until it has either reached Rank 50, or the original version of that skill line has been previously leveled to Rank 50 on any character in your account.

    How to Level Subclassing
Subclassing skill lines and abilities in ESO progress at a slower rate compared to standard class skills. However, progression is account-wide, meaning you only need to level each subclass skill line once across your entire account
It’s important to note that subclass skills and passives cost 2 skill points each, doubling the investment compared to normal class skills. As a result, you’ll need 40 skill points per subclass line, instead of the usual 20.

From my understanding, to use another class skill line for subclassing you have to have another character of that class at level 50 with the class skill line you want to use for subclassing also at level 50.
Like say you want to use the warden's Animal Companions skill line: you need to have a level 50 warden who has that skill line leveled up to 50.
