How does skill xp work with weapon swap?

Something I'm wondering with regards to how skills level -

Lets say I only have Dark Magic skills on my second bar, and I always kill stuff with the first. Do they gain any xp? Does Dark Magic gain xp?

Only your active weapon and skills on your active weapon bar gain EXP.

If you want to gain xp on the skills on your second bar, you can either : Change to that bar when you turn in quests, or you can put 1 ability from that weapon/skill line on your hot bar and then turn in the quest.

Edit: I know it can seem like a pain, but, in my opinion, it is worth the time to make sure you level a well balanced character.
