I don't like the mount speed change

I know I'm in the minority here and for most people the point of a mount is to go as fast as possible (and preferably a bit faster than that), but of all the issues with the update this is the one which is most putting me off playing right now, so I wanted to bring it up.

Important note for console players: On PC there are no analogue inputs like the thumb sticks on a controller. There are only 3 speeds to choose from: the 'default' run speed (equivalent to pushing the thumb stick all the way forward), walk which is as slow as possible, and sprint which is slightly faster than the default. So there is no way to move slower than your default run speed except to go at the slowest possible speed. I'm aware console controls offer more options, but that doesn't help me.

I've deliberately never trained any of my characters riding speed above 10%, and I settled on that through trial and error using the PTS to decide what was enough for a bit of a boost without being too fast to enable me to look around for things I might want to investigate while I'm riding to my destination. Now the base speed for untrained mounts has jumped up to be faster than what I'd chosen and all the ones where I've trained it up to 10% are far faster than I want them. Obviously I'm not using any other speed boosts, so there's no way for me to slow them down to get back to what I'd chosen for my characters.

I suspect I will eventually get used to having to keep stopping to look around instead of being able to do it while I'm heading to my destination, but right now it's very annoying and put me off playing, at least for today.

That would genuinely be useful for me.

I think riding skills are the one upgrade you can't reset or remove. I know that's because unlike attributes, skills, champion points etc. you can get all of them so there's no need to move points around, but it makes it frustrating when the way they work changes and I've already committed to something under the previous version.

My preference would be some equivalent to the analogue controls consoles have, but I don't think there's an easy way to do that on PC. The best I've been able to think of is a keybinding to change between a few different speeds, beyond the current walk toggle.

So for example you start off at the default (max) speed, press it once to slow down to walk speed, press it again and you're going slightly faster, press it again to go slightly faster than that etc. until you're back to max speed, with maybe 4 or 5 'steps' to choose from. Seperate to the sprint button obviously, which would be unchanged.

Would using a controller on PC work for this? Genuine question, I don't know if the controller support on PC allows it, but if it does that could be your solution.

If mounts are too fast, why not just leg it on foot everywhere then?

Heck, I dare say that Steed's Blessing and Celerity alone would be faster than what 10% mount speed looks likes. So with those two alone you're already moving faster than what you'd want anyway. So why use a mount at all even before the change?

Doubtless from those who had only recently bought the DLCs, which would be just as reasonable as complaining over an increase in mount speed as not everyone wants to charge everywhere at ridiculous speeds. It's one of the reasons why I hardly ever use a mount and don't increase them beyond the basic stablemaster training speed.

That might be the solution, although I like mounts and from a role-play perspective it would be odd not to use them. Until now they were a good solution when I wanted to go faster than running, but still enabled me to look around as I'm on my way somewhere to spot things I want to detour or stop for.

I know a lot of forum topics tend to deal with absolutes, but importantly I'm not saying I always want my characters to move slowly (otherwise I'd always have walk toggeled on and wouldn't be affected by this change), I do sometimes want to go faster than the default running speed, I just want to be able to choose how fast that is so it fits how I play the game, rather than being forced into an "upgrade" I'd previously chosen not to use.

Probably. I know it works in other PC games, but I've never wanted to use a controller in ESO and haven't tried it in years.

Right now I'm wondering if I could make an add-on to create a speed control keybind. I have no idea if that's possible because I don't make addons, but it might be the best solution since this was raised since it's very unlikely ZOS could or would do anything about it.

There are pros and cons to most ideas and no idea is perfect. So, every change can negatively impact someone. I don't think most people have a problem with the mount change but that doesn't mean none will. Same with any change. That's why it's a good idea to make big changes opt-in when possible. Although with this change, I can why that isn't possible since they want new player mounts to go faster and you have to assume new players don't have the points or coin to spare for optional increases.

One thing they could do perhaps is allowing PC players to select jog as a movement speed, if y'all don't have that speed already.

Just to chime in that I wholly agree with OP on the pleasure of pottering through the pretty landscape on horse-(/camel-/guar-/...)back, and the mild feeling of loss as a new character gets beyond 30% speed or so. (I'm to lazy to not have the higher speeds available when I want them, impressed with OP for sticking with 10%.) Going on foot just isn't the same, and walking your mount just isn't the same either.

ESO mounts really need a 'canter' speed setting inbetween 'walk' and 'gallop'.

Edit in light of spartaxoxo's posts: As far as I'm aware we only have 'walk' and 'run' (gallop). Having 'jog' (canter) inbetween would indeed be a great solution.

Edit: According to this 2020 post by Baertram it's not possible to do with an addon, unfortunately. If 'jog' is apparently something that exists on console, even with some custom animations, it seems odd that it is apparently not accessible at all for keybinding on PC.

I’m wondering if it would be possible to have someone at ZOS lower your trained mount speed back to zero for your toons since this change to base mount speed has happened. @ZOS_Kevin would it be worth the player putting in a ticket to request this, or is this impossible?

Edited to add: I don’t have a horse in this race (hehe) because I like to go everywhere as fast as possible, but I’ve always understood that some other people don’t so I’ve always argued against the green CP tree being completely passive for that reason. I like to slot my speed actives and know that I can take them off if I want to go slower. 🐎

That's what I do. I very rarely mount.... I harvest EVERYTHING as my girls are out doing their stuff, and the mount/dismount/pick/remount cycle is just extremely annoying to me.

Console player here. We get exactly one additional speed (between walk and run), although the difference in stick position between the two lowest settings is pretty small - it actually takes some care to just walk instead of jog. Most console players seem to sprint everywhere, though, which is pretty immersion breaking until you get used to it.

you could always switch to stage 4 vamp and run everywhere incognito also... it doesnt move that fast and you get to hide and it sips stamina on the right setups. a warden healer vamp can run in stealth from the bottom of cyrodil to the top on a stam toon before getting winded. not the solution you are wanting i'm sure but it's the next best thing i could think of. sorry!

I've just tested this on PC using a fully levelled mount and a controller. It seems to have almost a continuum of speeds. It can walk, trot, canter slowly, canter faster and gallop.

I play on PC and use a controller for ESO. It can still be done as on console (I use to play on console in the beginning when I had my original character transferred over).
I prefer to canter when I want and sprint when I need to unless I see a node or chest 😁

So it seems like the best solution for me would be for ZOS to add a toggle for jogging like they currently have for walking and running.

But on the assumption they're not going to do that, and since it's not possible to do it myself with an addon my options are:
    1) Find a way to make a button (or buttons) on my keyboard or mouse mimic a thumbstick. Not sure if this is possible yet (I don't have a keyboard with analogue keys.
    2) Use a controller. Possible but not ideal since I wouldn't want it for anything else.
    3) Buy a keypad with a thumbstick. Complicated because I'd want one to use in my right-hand and the vast majority are for the left-hand, also expensive. Definitely not something I'll be doing any time soon.
