So achievements are account wide, what happens if I start an achievement line with one character and
then switch characters will that achievement line carry on from where the first charcter got to ?

    Yes.

    I had a few achievements automatically complete the day they updated them to account-wide for exactly this reason, I had several characters who had some progress in the same achievements, and all of them combined had enough to complete it.
