Because companions have an "outfit 1" slot and you can change it at every outfit station at any time you want. It should be a drop down menu within the equipment tab if the companion menu.

No companion outfit displays their armor. No companion costume would not display the costume in the colors they wanted, it wouldn't display any costume at all.
In other words, if the wish is for the companion to use your collectible, that need is not met by disabling collectibles.

"No Companion Costume" would not display the costume that is set to show as the "Companion Costume", just the same way that "No Companion Outfit" doesn't show the set Companion Outfit". So the player is free to dress them any other way they choose.

But what happens if I want the costume blue on one character and black with another? Your way sounds like I could not do that.
