Usefullness Of Crafting

IdioticUlt1mara
Is there really any use to crafting before lvl 50 or is it just as good to get all ur items through loot and quest items? Just a little question before I go too much further into the game without dealing with crafting all that much

Well, as you craft you do level each type of crafting you work in. If you look at the skills section of your menu, you'll notice you can only use certain materials at lower skill levels. Once you hit 50, it would suck to only be able to craft with level 1 items.
  • IdioticUlt1mara
In prior MMOs I have played I tended to concentrate on actual leveling and then increasing my crafting skills. I do not mind backtracking to get level 1 items and such. As I find that at the max level you can have a lot more "free" time because you no longer have to worry about leveling up. Is the things you can craft better than the things you can get from drops and quest rewards is more the question I meant

Oh heck yeah! The only time I find gear better than what I craft is *occasionally* what comes out of the buried treasure chests you get from the CE treasure maps. They tend to be better than most quest items too. I end up breaking down most things I find, or using them to research.

That helps a lot thank you. Now I think I will be using the crafting system quite a bit more then. ^^

Food seems to be better than the basic food you get from stealing. So far at low level (10 and under), loot gear is more than adequate. It's just once it wears down, you need to find more or make your own, which can be as good I found.

Yes craft! Ya, I know looking for mats is a pain, but its totally worth it and make sure you put points into your crafting skills especially keen eye (so mats are easier to find especially at night) and the extraction skill really works. Last night I made my first set of Dread Wind gear, the set bonus is awesome.

ZOS stated that crafted gear/potions/food/enchantments will always be better than the stuff you'll find out in the world (you just have to refine your gear as well). And from my own experience I find this to be true.

I've been using Blacksmithing and Woodworking to craft armor, weapons and shields for my Templar as kind of a gap-fill to get better gear whenever I don't get a drop or quest reward upgrade for a few levels. My leveling partner has been feeding me all the items he doesn't need as well as keeping me supplied with buff food and potions since he's been grinding out Alchemy and Provisioning.

I think it's working out pretty well so far.
  • IdioticUlt1mara
Thank you very much people. I will focus more on crafting ..... I was doing Alchemy and Enchating. But I really should be doing Clothier and Woodworking :P

@radiostar‌ Yeah, crafted food is literally like 10 times better (+some) compared to found food. The potions are better.

@Salacious‌ If you craft your own gear, you can push your main stat to just below the overcharge and then balance your character out. It's a good way to be really powerful and manage your stats.

The problem with that is if you spend all your points in black smithing or wood working or what ever, then you have less points for actual combat skills ...

I am absolutely loving the crafting in this game. My only issue, thus far, is bag space. :)

Im with geekgirl.... I really like the Depth of the crafting system. Now to find a way to deal with the lack of mat storage.

Again I run 3 characters, each specializing in 1 or 2 crafting skills. I would love for my Sorc to be my light/medium armor maker and be able to MAIL the medium armor to my Knightblade.... instead I need to keep bank slots free just for trading gear back and forth. Poor design choice IMHO.

This. Please allow me to send mail to my other characters. Pretty please.

@Salacious You get plenty of skill points between leveling, quest rewards and sky shards, so that's really not an issue as long as you're only focusing on one or two crafting skills.

You just need to be selective about what you spend points on as you're leveling to make sure that you maintain a decent mix of useful combat vs. crafting skills.

I've just had poor luck finding the materials and race knowledge for Blacksmithing/woodworking/clothing... At least the material needed for improvements and crafting. Just started getting Hirelings, to maybe that will help! Only Level 8, so the weapons I've found or received via quests work alright so far.

Well my original question was if you can craft better gear than what you can get while leveling and the answer has been a resounding yes. Meaning time to craft for me :P

The only thing that annoys me slightly about blacksmithing is you get far far far far less exp for actually ... well smithing .... you shouldn't get 5x the amount of exp for decomposing gear .... it kind of makes the collecting node bit pointless until you are higher level.

Equal out the make exp to the break exp, I have levelled my blacksmithing to 15 now solely on breaking because currently there is no need to make.
  • IdioticUlt1mara

I go against the common opinion here. The best gear I got up to level 10 was from raiding Loot Chests. I use crafting to bridge the gap between finding better gear.
I guess that crafting will come on its own at higher levels with plenty of research done.
Remember..in order to to craft sets one must have researched two traits in every set item.

anyhow..the crafting system is far from being completed as yet. I guess we will see plenty of changes heading our way.

Probably the best part of the game, something i was always annoyed about in the EQ days was the lack of materials to complete the epic bow i wanted to make. Here is i choose to stuble across recipies (food and beverages), fiddle with ingrediants (alchemy), or just pull stuff appart cause i can (enchanting/deconstruction) i can then blissfully experiement with stuff to create more stuff (So says Galleger). Ignoring the how too's the online cheat memoirs and such should yeild many hours of tinkering joy. What can possibly go wrong?
  • IdioticUlt1mara
I do love crafting myself and collecting materials but I tend to do it later on when I have more time to do it and less time having to worry about leveling ... not that I am leveling fast anyways only level 13 and got the 5 days early access :(

Yah set bonuses are usually great but crafting is fairly time consuming and i seem to be leveling far quicker than my crafting skills are. Everyone has there own style of playing but i'm just gonna rush 50 than go back buy ton of mats from guild stores with all my level 50 gold and just grind it out. I wasted way more time than I care to admit creating a set bonus and than upgrading it to just blue, to just have it all replaced by dungeon gear of a higher level a few hours later. I guess the choice here is if you want to rush 50 or if you want a twinked out low level. I personally can't wait for end game.

To add to what @Opioid mentioned: Since crafted gear is stronger than what you find and what you get from questing, you can think of the added gear stats as "combat skills".

Example: Crafted sword grants 100 attack, Quest reward sword grants 80 attack
Your investment in Blacksmithing earns you a permanent 20 attack bonus in combat. This applies to any gear stat (armor, magicka, stamina, etc).

One problem with waiting until you're level 50 is research. It will take hundreds of hours to unlock all of the traits on the gear for just a couple of crafting skills. If you start early then you can spend those hours in parallel with your leveling. If you wait until you're 50 then you're starting at time zero.

Not really, there are 360 (or something) skillpoints to spend, and when I calculated my build which uses blacksmith, clothing and woodworking, I came to a total of 150 skillpoints needed. You can even max everything out if you are willing to take the time.
You do however have a choice during the levelling if you want to put a point into clothing or into a new combat ability. So it might take longer to get certain abilities because you choose to put points into crafting. And you have to decide yourself if you are willing to do that (I certainly am, I love crafting)
