More maintenance? Again? During an event?

Why, Zos, do you constantly take servers down during limited time events? Didn't we just have maintenance? Every single event the servers are taken down (Jubilee '24 never forget), and yet it doesn't seem any issues are actually fixed. If this is "regularly scheduled quarterly" fixes, can't it wait just 1 more day so peoples' event time isn't taken away? I dunno, just a really big disappointment to see every event shortened from multiple maintenance. Kinda ruins the experience when such poorly planned timing gets in the way of enjoying the game.

Let's not forget the fact they run the maintenance in Europe from 08:00 to 16:00 UTC. Which is basically during the active hours of players. I've been playing WoW for years and I don't remember ever being blocked from playing during the day. Early mornings at worst.

The maintenance banner's been up since Friday (with a link to the thread explaining the reason for the maintenance), so there was plenty of time to be notified. And missing only one day of a non-ticketed event isn't really the end of the world.

It isn't really one day though, both consoles had long maintenance last week too

    • PC EU maintenance/update time occurs during the week and coincides for when most people are at work or school, college, uni, etc. or at least should be! so the game is up and running for when they are back home.

    • If there was no maintenance then the game wouldn't function.

    • If there were no updates, then you wouldn't be playing ESO at all.

    • The reason why both servers have to be worked on at the same time is that any issues that occur during maintenance can be checked, diagnosed, addressed and cross referenced with the other server at the same time which is infinitely more efficient.

    • Missing 5 hours of an 11 day event is a drop in the ocean, and ZoS do extend events if maintenance goes significantly over time.

Everything that does not end the world, ranging from missing the alarm in the morning to the Permian-Triassic extinction event, is literally 'not the end of the world' therefore as far as non-arguments go this one is stellar.

I grazed my knee against the bed frame this morning and drew blood, didn't end the world either.

Stay tuned for more things that will happen today that won't end the world.

That still doesn't answer the question why.

There is a maintenance alert post linked in the banner, along with the maintenance notice, which explains why.

Maintenance is understandable. Times .not so much.

From a business perspective : An on-line game that is not on-line = no revenue

      1) Determin the dollar earn average translated to sec.,min., and hours with-in 24hr.
      2) Chart the mean time between revenue sales to determin to largest gap between sale.
      3) Factor cost of adjustment
4)Move off-line schedule to lowest dollar cost/gain/loss average from above data

In my opinion: The NA server should be down as little as possible when the EST (east coast) and this include eairly morning.
Players may want to log-in before work.

      Just a thought.

It kinda is at this point.

In previous years seems to me that there was more of a window of opportunity to slot even quarterly maintenances between events but this year has been... drum roll a very eventful one :smirk:

There was next Wednesday I guess, but the Wednesday slot is usually taken by consoles and they might have a regular (console) maintenance already scheduled.

Oh well, here is hoping that it won't be an extended maintenance.

If you clicked the link in the banner, you'd find a post answering it.

      It says:
Hi all. On Wednesday, October 16 beginning at 4:00 AM EDT/8:00 AM UTC, we will be bringing down all ESO megaservers and the ESO store and account system for regularly scheduled quarterly backend datacenter fixes and updates.

We anticipate the megaserver maintenance to be complete by 12:00 PM EDT/16:00 UTC, and the ESO store and account system maintenance to be complete by 12:00 PM EDT/16:00 UTC. We will keep you updated on the progress of both.

This is the answer to "why?".

What do you mean 'should be', I have been retired for 14 years now. No doubt quite a few more are retired as well. That's apart from others at home with ill health. Then there is those that work shift and can only play in the day time. The list goes on. As a matter of fact it seems there are plenty playing in the day on the EU server.

Maintenance has long been a bone of contention on the EU server. A feeling of them and us so to speak. Then there are the times when it all goes pear shaped when you will be lucky to get any game time in at all. Such comments just don't cut the mustard, sorry to say.

It’s not even a ticketed event so it’s not that big of a deal. Plus like some others have said, they say why and that banner has been up a while.

They do maintenance when they do maintenance… not everyone will be happy about it. Do something else during that time.

      like reading interesting posts :p

During the afternoon of Loredas, 6 Sun’s Dawn 2e578 a big piece of Aetherius fell to Nirn. It was the first major piece of Aetherius to fall on Nirn in more than five hundred years. It scattered around the world as millions of shards. It was rapidly documented by Lady Cinnabar of Taneth in her pamphlet Aetherial Fragments that "... when three shards meet, they re-form into a silvery prism by unknown process and confer the power unlocked by the merger to a nearby being." The Order of the Black Worm, commonly known as the Worm Cult, reappeared in Tamriel shortly thereafter and some of its members are avidly searching said shards.
In the last week of First Seed 2e579, an arcane explosion occurred in the Imperial City — a night of storms, and trembling terrain. They named it the "Soulburst". That day Emperor Varen Aquilarios disappeared without a trace. His wife, Clivia Tharn, ascended to the Ruby Throne as Empress Regent under the guidance of the Necromancer Mannimarco. Ushering a time of increased instability within the Empire of Cyrodiil which finally grew into “The Three Banners War”.

I don't even care about the event, or that there is maintenance, but it's hilarious zos asked this:

Edit: I thought the event ended today which would have been more funny.

The really easy answer is that events start and stop between maintenance slots, and not actually overlap.
Yes, events would be a day shorter, because ZOS feels it makes more sense to have maintenance occur (as much as possible) on the same specific week day for consistency, rather then float them, but many people are always surprised when they occur anyway.

While maintenance would still be impacting available times to play the game - players would feel less animosity about losing time during an event.
Conversely, ZOS could run events for the full duration, while floating maintenance days between events, but that would eventually accumulate event delays over the course of a year by one day for each event, most likely resulting in needing to omit, as needed, an optional (surprise) event like the current Explorers event we now have, to keep the normally scheduled events centered around regular holidays and celebrations.

As usual, there's no perfect answer that accommodates everyone around the 24 hour time zone world.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

I'm guessing maintenance is done on the schedule of ZoS employees and when it is best for them to do the maintenance.
