Why oh WHY did the way mission markers work changed?

I remember that for any mission, if you looked for it in the map, it would point you to the actual location, if you went to the journal and pressed M it would literally show you the destination

Nowadays they changed something in the map system because when I open the map to see the location, if I am in the city, it points towards the exit of it, then I need exit the city to get the destination marker

Or even worse, if I am in another location and do the Journal+M, it points me to X location that is NOT the destination, for example, Bangkorai is divided, for some reason, and I wanted to go to A thirst for revolution, which I left without completing, and I forgot where it was so I just did Journal+M and it had the marker on the northern gate of Bangkorai garrison, so I ported to the Bangkorai Pass Wayshrine, and then entered the city... and the marker was pointing to the southern door, so I exited and oh surprise, the mission takes place in Hallin's stand, all the way to the south west!!!

Why cant the markers point you directly to the actual destination as before?

My thought was that's about sub-instance proximity so newer closed towns are way more far away from actual "outside" than before, which is probably made for performance sake same as a decision to have closed towns at all (which suck but here we are).

It's a pain having to port out from the city to see the correct pin. Also, the times I wasn't paying attention and followed a pin that just marked the entrance to the map that the quest was in...

100% agree. This is such a pig pet peeve of mine and the opposite of a QoL feature.

Agreed. The transit time getting dragged out unnecessarily and added frustration do not contribute to my gameplay experience in a positive manner.

Agree completely. It worked way better before, when the pin was at the quest location. I hate having to port out of a city or other location (if I'm in a delve or something) just to see where the actual location is.

It's been like that for a really long while, console here, so maybe there was some addon helping out that isn't anymore?

I have been in the game since the last closed beta, left it, came back when Vvardenfel came out, and then left again around the time Starfield came out and I am just coming back in, and I remember that it was that way before I left for starfield, so around 1 year ago give or take

I agree with those who said the previous quest marker system was better - the marker always pointed in the direction of the next objective. I wish I understood why ZOS replaced it with this less logical system. We don't need to be shown the way out of the current zone on our way to the objective - that's just hand-holding taken to ridiculous extremes.

Yea for dailies you have to leave the city to a random wayshrine to get the map to show the vent/incursion whatever, or the delve, and then you can then jump to the nearest wayshrine.

I've also noticed that after Gold Road's launch, there has been lots and lots of bugged out quest markers, all around the game, be it base game or DLC. It's getting really frustrating when the marker is who knows where, then magically fixes itself once you get there and I need backtrack to the correct place. This isn't an issue in content I've done many times as I remember where to go, but just last night I had a quest marker glitch while doing Firesong side quests. I was so angry for the time wasted, lol.

The old system did work better, and I'm not a fan of the increased time spent on this kinda thing either.
I don't mind the closed cities very much though, as I see them as a reasonable means to an end (I admit I am uncertain about the technical side of it, and whether it makes a real difference on performance, and if it gives the option of making the cities more detailed because they're their own "zone").
After the new system I regularly right click my quest in the journal and ask it to point to the objective, it's a little inconvenient but works ok to find out where I'm actually going, as with the other solutions that people's mention to handle the change, it takes longer.

No, nothing to do with addons. It was changed a good while back and frustrates me somewhat, but I've never used a single addon so it wasn't to do with them.

It has always worked like this for as long as I can remember, going back to mid-2017 when I started playing. If you search the forums you can find threads about this dating back for years. And it also used to show quest markers at the navigators and boatswains and wayshrines, although I think they changed something within the last year or two that was intended to improve that particular behavior.

I took a break from ESO and only started playing again after 2018, and at that time, the quest markers were at the quest location, not at the nearest exit for whatever are you're in. It definitely changed after I came back to the game, so after 2018.

That’s not how I remember it. If you’re in area that has its own “zoom-in” map, then you see the quest marker on an exit. Some areas do not have their own “zoom-in” maps, so they exhibit different behavior in that respect. And I’ve never used addons, so I don’t know how any addons might affect this.

I always had the impression the change was one of the compromises they needed to make to make the engine do whatever they were trying to do (so, yes, probably something to do with carved off towns). My recollection, which may be wrong, was that it started around the time of Greymoor or Blackwood. It certainly didn't behave like that when I started playing at the time of Summerset.

That's how it's working now. Before, the quest marker was always on the actual quest location. When I was in a city, I could open the map for the zone and see the quest location. Now I see the exit to the city, which doesn't help me when I'm trying to decide where to port.
