Lag

I’m writing this as a desperate plea from Australia. The state of the servers right now makes the game nearly impossible to enjoy. I’m stuck with 300+ ping on a good day, and the experience is a complete mess. I get it—Australia is far, but with the current setup, we’re lagging so far behind that it’s a joke.

This isn’t just me either. There’s a whole community of players down here who want to keep playing, but it’s getting harder to justify sticking around when the lag ruins every dungeon, every BG and Cyrodil. Right now, it’s like we’re playing with a handicap. You have a loyal Aussie player base that’s just asking for the bare minimum so we can enjoy the game on somewhat equal footing.

I'll trade you your 300 ping for my 750-999, how's that. I live in the US, and my only available connection (other than, yeah, dial up....) is satellite.

Try pvp on satellite sometime. Good thing I don't pvp....

Ever since they moved the calculations onto the servers, it's been rough performance. The client used to perform a lot of the calculations, but that got abused via certain cheat addons and the like. So they moved the calculations server side.

When ESO went to Stadia is when they moved everything from client side to server side. (Back around Greymoor 4 years ago.) Ever since then there's always been desync, but it's gotten progressively worse year after year. Stadia has been dead and buried since January of 2023, but the calculations were never moved back to client side for the anti cheat reasons, I guess. I wish they would swap them back as the servers clearly can't handle the load.

ESO has been super laggy on Xbox NA these last few weeks. Rubber banding in Cyrodiil and Imperil City even when server populations were low.

Last night everyone in our full group ( all U.S. - based players) was having lag issues. Videos below from two players, but everyone was complaining about it.
    - https://youtu.be/fhf74tj96Zo?si=rM3jI4VLsAqQxAqf

And it wasn't just because of a full group -- I was playing solo for an hour before joining with the group and it was super laggy then too.

@ZOS_Kevin not sure if you're the right person to tag for this, but can we get some kind of explanation for why it's been so laggy lately? This has been a problem not just in pvp, but in group-instanced areas like dungeons and infinite archive.

Terrible time for server issues when a competitor MMO just came out. I wasn't planning to switch games, but this lag is driving several of my guild mates away. I might have to join them.

No. Neither is available in my very out of the way "back of beyond". I even had to cancel the "sort of free" first few months of Starlink on the new Forester when we bought it, because it kept trying to connect and throwing error messages all over the stupid media panel. The "best" connection I have available is HughesNet satellite.

They've actually been moving things around since the very beginning. I remember specific changes made to block long before Stadia even existed for the sake of 'avoiding desync' as they put it. I remember it because at the time I was big into tanking in dungeons and it made it impossible to block on reaction for anyone with a ping higher than 50.

It was very early on in the life of the game. I have no idea how to look it up, but it did indeed happen.

Edit: I did some searching through old patch notes and comments. The earliest references to these things are anecdotal (like my own) from as early as 1.4. So it may be that I am repeating what I've heard/misunderstood. Now I'm not sure. lol

I played on a High Performance Starlink unit in ball group and completed trifectas. Starlink works great for this game personally. There would be super brief moments of ping spike but nothing that bad.

Biggest thing I can suggest is make sure it is some where that doesn't have obstructions and get it up higher if possible.

Sorry, I must have missed that part. They are opening up new cities literally every week. Keep checking. My area wasn't on the list of places it was available but I was able to place an order and it said there was service. Maybe I just caught it at a weird point before they got the graphic updated but their backend was updated. But yeah, keep checking. It's much better than hughesnet

It's a VERY small market here. Vanishingly small - less than 200 full time residents. It's a very nice back of beyond, but it's got to be pretty far down on Starlink's "get 'em connected" list.

HughesNet is so much better than Wildblue was, I really even hate to complain though!

300+ is the normal state for NZ. Typical Aussies

But seriously though, yes, be nice to not just run along behind in dungeons/trials watching things die because the game never lets you get a shot off once it's worked out the thing might be there for you, but it's dead for everyone else.

Only the boss fights are possible really. Rest of the time you run behind looking at the scenary, feeling guilty.

it's not odd at all, australia is physically further to the US than Colorado is to Germany, which means you are literally supposed to get better ping on EU server than aussies get on NA or EU server. All this is bethesda's decision to not cater to the australian market
