Crafting with runestones of different levels of rarity

Hello all! So I have found runestones of varying levels- lots of white, a few green, a blue and a purple. My question is how the system works when you combine runestones of different levels? Do you need to save the rare ones to use only together, like blue with blue or purple with purple? Or can you mix and match with varying results? Any info would be great, thanks!

if u combine blue w/ purple, it can be blue or purple but you risk a lot and you cant go back0
