Make random super rare drops

Please consider putting extremely rare random drops in the game. Mounts, skins, hair, pets the list is endless. ESO does a great job of earnable rewards in the game but almost no random drops that are worth while are in this game. I think it would add a great fun element to the game without effort to the player. What do you all think?

I don't think that word means what you think it means...

The best evidence we have is that ZOS did exactly this during the anniversary event - 5 super rare style pages that you earned by grinding specific activities. That grind seriously drove a lot of people away from the game, and - as people on the forums are keen to point out - the game population has been struggling since then.

Doing exactly that was one of the worst decisions that this game ever made and I hope they never again force people to grind like that for unsellable things with a 0.01% drop rate.

I think the OP was more alludiing to drops that are so rare that grinding for them would be pointless. Like the Aetheric Cypher, which outside of the Jubilee event, is an extremely rare drop from any monster loot-drop that even players of 10 years almost never see.

Those style pages you refer to, while incredibly rare, were tied to specific activities and just common enough to entice players to grind for them.

[edit[ Oops.. forgot to say that I'm all for this idea. The same has crossed my own mind from time to time.

And, apart from what @tomofhyrule said, the Style Pages were not a game changer - they were just styles that only a fraction of players will EVER use.

But you know, the capability to divide and infuriate people with "oh-so-good-stuff" exceeded our expectations.

So, hypothetically, if there was such an item - which it is, Aetherial Dust - other than the dust, it would be merely a cosmetic. Something almost no one would notice.

I think you misunderstand, I am suggesting random drop that no one knows about. Just extremely rare things you cant get any other way. I don't want to grind for things but hey I just opened this chest and look! This random mob or boss dropped this!
Never make it known to anyone, just a random rare occurrence.

Oh, well in this case. There are some. But as no one knows about them, we can't tell what it is.

So something that nobody knows about until someone gets it and puts it on reddit. At which point people will know about it.
(and this is assuming that it's not datamined and people know about it before, which they would)

And you think that in ESO, a game whose playerbase has been shown to caregreatly about cosmetics, people would say "meh, I don't care about this one." This game's playerbase has proven countless times that they are very interested in grinding cosmetics. I'm still disappointed that they're hiding useable cosmetics like personalities behind hard achievements (and I say this as someone who has all but three dungeon trifectas) because that's essentially barring RP shenanigans behind sweaty PvE stuff. I am vehemently opposed to blocking cosmetics behind anything annoying.

No, what's going to happen is that people will find out, and then people will start grinding like mad and not get it, and then get frustrated and leave the game. Which is what we were seeing happen during the anniversary event. You want to do the same thing and make it worse?!?!?

I don't see people grinding for the Aetheric Cipher. And it's exactly the type of super rare drop the OP is talking about. And it's even better than a style item.

No thanks. There are enough RNG lottery systems in the game already as it is. Ultra rare random drops lead to player disappointment and even resentment of those who get lucky. People generally prefer playing games that feel fair.

Why would the average player enjoy this? If it's as rare as you suggest the average player will never see any of this.

I'd rather see more rewards added for actually completing content and achievements in the game, at a variety of difficulty levels. That's what I consider fun, not rng. The reaction to recent items behind an rng lottery, such as motifs locked behind treasure map leads; the anniversary style pages; and ink drops, has not been positive.

I also think focusing on rng rewards is bad for the game. A few players get the ultra rare rng things with ease and then have nothing to do and demand more rewards to work toward; while other players frustrate and burn themselves out going for the things to the point that they're not even pleased anymore when they get them and are just glad its over. While others may never get them at all. Basically just leads to a lot of discontent.

Unlike the other people on this thread, I think having super rare drops is a very nice idea for replayability.

ZOS proved that they can do it right. Currently, in some dungeons and zones you can get rare furnishings which encourage going to these places (Especially when there's nothing special to do in game)
J Hart Ellis made a video about said furnishings. This is not only good for collectionners but is also beneficial for the economy as some of these items are quite the big bucks (Looking at you Scrivener's Hall door)
Another great display for this is the trial Asylum Sanctorium. Currently, it's one of the most ran trial (at least on PC EU by judging pug discords like Root) as it has a very small chance to drop a (cool) polymorph. Out of all trials, this one feels like having the most replayability (which can't be said about most trials, you get your loot and achievements and don't have any particular reason to run them).

People use the 10 year anniversary fiasco to say it's a bad idea which isn't the best exemple for it as those style pages were available for a very limited amount of times (or if you logged in on pts wink wink). We all can agree that having extremly rare time limited drops is only leading to fatigue. Same case for the players who just want to have everything accessible right away, this will only kill slowly the playerbase as we won't have the replayabilty to keep us up.

The rare drops will be a good way to determine activities to do as you can either aim to acquire said rare collectibles or acquire the gold to purchase those rare collectibles. So I highly believe that implementing PERMANENT rare drops is a healthy thing for the game. Them being permanent doesn't rush the players to get the drops which will reduce the fatigue aspect we got from the anniversary, this aspect can be lead further by not having achievements for them to not give the feeling of having to obtain them (Like the vAS polymorph per example).

Tldr: zos pls add more rare drops.

I don't know that I want mounts or hair styles or anything, but I *REALLY* enjoy that there are some elsweyr pillows, fragrance bottles, (and other furnishings) that are obtainable from Elsweyr. Or same from Clockwork City, though that isn't as much my style.

I like that it gives me a reason to park a toon in CWC and Elsweyr and steal for the reward of a rare furnishing.

I'm honestly sad that isn't a tradition that has continued with newer chapters.

So I like it in the context that I've seen it in the game already with the rare furnishings, but outside of that I feel a bit hesitant.

New items = more reason to play that content.

But adding super rare items will just make people go on forum and be upset about it, and those Who actually enjoy to grind for rare items are not heard and useally not talking about it in forum for diffrent reasons..

I wanted something like this a while back so there was an incentive to do activities outside of a lead, but after the recent anniversary event, I don't think the concept can fit into ESO. Activities outside of simple resource farming just takes up too much time for them to have a rare drop added to them. World events take roughly 5 minutes to complete, and then you need to take the time to travel to the next one since world events are rotational instead of a set spawn timer. World bosses take roughly 5 minutes to respawn, and depending on the zone, can take some time to kill. Group and Solo instance content also take a lot of time to complete. Anything smaller than a 1/100 chance for these activities is overkill and would lead to severe burnout and make people avoid the grind altogether. It's even worse if ZOS decides to add FOMO to the mix as well.

The most absurd rare drop in this game currently is Chef Arquitius's Lost Thesis. It's so rare that there's probably only ever 1 obtained per year, and last I checked, recently sold for over 1Bn PC/NA. Not only that, it also requires an absurdly rare crafting material too. If you thought luminous ink was rare, try farming for mourning dew. It's something you'll probably never see in your life even if you intentionally farm for it.

I'm on EU, just checked it; there, the prices start at 16k and there's a good dozen of it. It's indeed an insane price drop.

I mean, I don't want to complain, but it's a bit weird that it took them 7 years to adjust the drop rate (there have been rumours before that the rarity was a bug more or less). Of course I'm happy they still bothered at all, after that time.
      XSTRONG wrote: »

I'm personally not upset. I just stop to bother if something is so rare that I don't have a decent chance to get it, so it's not bringing anything positive for me either (no extra incentive, no more fun).

I can understand the frustration though, if it's an item someone really, really wants for their character roleplay-wise, or for a housing project that means a lot to them, and then they grind it without end, but still don't get it.
