Interestingly limited promotion. 65,000 hours from people who linked their Steam account to Alienware _and_ play through the Steam client so that their hours can be counted. I will be interesting to see how this goes down.

So if I understand this correctly. For me to obtain this item I need to link my non steam eso account to steam, and then I have to link my linked steam account to Alienwares website, and then I have to play eso a lot, and then I have to go hunt down a code and redeem it...

And if I don't do the above then I can't participate?

pretty much what i gathered from it

the cutoff date on it is august 12, so 65,000 combined hours in 1 week from people who actually bother with the promotion

not to mention you can sort of "cheese" steam played hours by just leaving the launcher running and steam still sees you as playing eso

the odd thing i see is 65,000 hours in 1 week

1 week is 168 hours, which is the maximum amount 1 person can contribute, so you would need an absolute minimum of about 387 people participating, if they say leave the eso launcher running through steam 24/7 during the promotion

if you figure an avg playtime of 30 hours a week per person, you would need around 2167 people to participate

You appear to be assuming that the specific conditions of the promotion were set by ZOS, but how do you know they weren't set by Alienware?

This promotion gives players who haven't already acquired the costume a way to do so now, but anyone who is worried about their ability to meet the conditions of this promotion should check their Collections first to see whether they already have it before getting upset.

I don't think these third-party promotions are meant to give all players a guaranteed opportunity to get something, but are instead a way for players who purchase a third party's product (as in the Doritos promotion) or use their services (as in promotions from Xbox or whatever) a chance to get something they'd missed out on when it was previously given away by ZOS.

Shame this is locked to only for those who have the game through steam and not available who have the game stand-alone or through epic.

Yes, but the costume will likely be available again from other promotions, so anyone who can't get it during this promotion will hopefully have other opportunities to earn it in future promotions.

As for $20, that price is bloated. I've seen it on Steam for <$6 multiple times over the last 6 months either from Valve directly or from Steam resellers like Fanatical, cdkeys.com, Green Man Gaming, etc. I already had the original PC release with purchased DLCs. I was able to merge that into Steam with a single base game (One Tamriel) Steam purchase.

My game purchase and account predate ESO being sold on Steam, I've never needed to link it to Steam and so have never bothered to do so, I feel having to add an extra step to play is silly and I seem to have far less issues accessing my game then those I know who do play via steam. I'm a bit bummed I won't be able to earn these rewards but it is what it is. Have fun with this prize when you all unlock it.

I figure they set the value based on average player numbers, but I wonder how many Steam players even use the Steam client vs just running the game. I don’t.

The interesting news is that Steam has no idea if the game is being played. The players can just sit at login for the next 65,000 hours.

If you bought ESO that long ago, it's likely that you've already gotten the costume from an earlier promotion. If that's the case, the only thing you're potentially missing out on are the experience scrolls.

And if you somehow missed getting the costume from an earlier promotion, you might eventually get another chance during some future promition.

I wasn't sure if I had it until I checked the image, apparently I've had it for a while now and I remember thinking how much it looked like the Mannimarco costume.

Alienware wants to get game statistic in exchange for ingame costume. But it does that in a way that makes part of your personal data available not only for them but for everyone.

i did some rough estimates in an earlier post about approximately how many people it would take

technically speaking as well, steam sees you as "playing eso" even if you just leave the launcher running and never actually launch the game lol

thats why it seems really weird for them to have the count based on steam hours played, because for something like eso, its definitely inflated, any time you spend sitting on the launcher, patching, or whatnot is still considered "hours played" even if you spent 4 hours patching because you have a slow HD or something lol

It's for this reason I won't be participating. My accounts are linked but the data they need is locked behind private profiles, and/or limited access to friends only. I don't intend changing data visibility settings.

In the grand scheme of things, this is all just a promotion to boost brand awareness, with the additional effect, increasing Steam and general ESO participation and engagement. Someone who is aware of the promotion and is playing ESO without participating in the promotion is accomplishing goals, regardless.

And to top the cake they are now taking almost a full European day to commit maintainance, nice thinking, or did they fry the server

like they where giving away What was it "clockwork city" or something only interesting for the 6 or so new players and a lot of these giveaways like a pet pony that everyone already had, or some riding animal.
sometimes you get compensation but mosttimes ....

Hmm. I didn't have Clockwork City unlocked, and I've been playing the game since before my characters were created!

I really don't care about pets, mounts, and costumes. They can give away ones I already own. I rarely use them when I get them, since these things tend to be so over the top with swirlies and such and I don't care for them.

I think the promotion may have been extended to August 20 by Alienware Arena, because their page now shows that as the ending date:

I'm participating-- even though I already have the costume-- because I want to help the community reach the goal.

Most of my Steam privacy settings were already set to Public; I think the only one I had to change was the one that lets others see how many hours you've played your games. I actually changed one of my settings from Public to Friends Only, but it isn't one that's mentioned in the event instructions. Once the promotion is over, I'll just change my settings back to however I want.

I just want to quickly say something.

Originally I got this game through Steam. I have my privacy settings too strict to count for this promo, and while it would be very easy for me to change them and I would normally be willing to do this... I'm not going to do it now.

I just find it very unrewarding that ZOS is recycling rewards again and again. I'm a fairly loyal player, I spend a lot of time in this game, I have a lot of Crown Store items and collector's editions. While I do find it nice that other people can now get stuff for free, it just feels like ZOS doesn't really care enough to give away something that is new for everyone.

I love cosmetics, and while I do hope that everyone that gets the costume through this promo is happy with it. But since I already have it, this time I won't join in. Not even for the community.

I seriously doubt ZOS would "give away something that is new" as part of a third-party's promotional event, because players who were either unable or unwilling to participate in the promotion, and who therefore would not be receiving the free thing, would complain about it. Just look at this thread where some players are complaining about not being able to receive this previously-released costume because they don't own ESO through Steam and therefore can't qualify (unable to participate), or for that matter your own post where you say that you refuse to change your Steam privacy settings for this promotion (unwilling to participate). And you're disgruntled that the reward for participating is not something new? o_O

Gold Road is only about half that discount on XBox. Not nearly deep enough to drive me to upgrade. I encourage them to try again and do better. First digit in the discount should be nothing lower than a "5", but more is better.

More on topic, the promotion has reached 70k hours, so I assume that participants will actually be getting the costume. They already handed out three XP scrolls via promo code. I assume that when everyone is out of bed, and adequate volumes of coffee have been consumed, another promo code will be sent out for the costume.

I've had ESO as a standalone product for a few years. I saw it was 70% off on Steam recently for the base game, so I grabbed it to earn the rewards for this event (and future ones on Steam):


Set everything up correctly: Connected accounts, steam settings public, etc etc:

(All accounts linked on my TESO account settings page too, and I followed the 'Alienware Quest' advice for setup)

Alienware Arena site registered things as connected; the 'Join Event' button appeared once TESO was in my steam library and installed; I clicked it ofc.

Since Aug 9th, when I bought TESO on Steam, I've had 12.3 hours on record according to Steam:


Nothing on the Alienware site has updated though.
I've been starting the game through their 'Launch Game' button; allowing days for the data to be logged; tried logging in and out of the account too:



Entire event seems absolutely scuffed on an individual level, at least for me.
I've reached out to Alienware Arena about it, but so far I've had no response

Did you check your privacy settings on your Steam profile? Alienware needs to be able to check your profile to see how many hours you've played.
