Why do companions walk behind their friends?

Like if they'd be servants. Couldn't they walk more on my side?

While in movement, it makes sense that the companion follows you, since you as the player decide where everyone is going. If they always ran/walked next to you, it would look more unnatural, especially when changing directions. However, they should come to a stop next to you - not sure what that looks like in-game.

It's probably a matter of practicality. If they walked closer to you, they would get in the way if you stopped to interact with the environment. We already have many players complaining when they accidentally click on the companions when trying to loot things.

I suspect it's both these things. It would be much more difficult for them to automatically follow you if they were next to you because they'd need to move at the same time you do, meaning they'd need to know where you're going before you do, or constantly make corrections (and it would need additional programming to allow for small spaces where they have to go behind you), and then they'd be more likely to get in the way of things you're trying to see or interact with, especially for people who like to play in 1st person or with the camera close to their character.

Reminds me of the one time I got destroyed in Trial because I accidentally interacted with some guy's merchant crow. Having a good laugh now thinking back

The AI would be difficult to program, to make companions behave like real-life companions, and would thus be costly to implement.

IMHO... If anything, they don't walk far enough behind you. I don't know how many times I've come close to raging at my companion because they keep stealiing Clicky Focus on what I'm tryiing to interact with.

To be honest, I wish I could set the distance they walk at myself, that way I could customize it depending on my needs at the time.
    Legends never die
    They're written down in eternity
But you'll never see the price it costs
The scars collected all their lives
When everything's lost, they pick up their hearts and avenge defeat
Before it all starts, they suffer through harm just to touch a dream
    Oh, pick yourself up, 'cause
    Legends never die

Because they'd have to be psychic to figure out which way your toon will go next.

I remember when Fable 2 came out and your dog running ahead/following at your side was a huge deal.

ESO certainly could do it, but I doubt it'd be worth the dev resources to do so. Following the player is just easier.

Mh. Dunno how you deal with your friends when you are touring with them.

Mine always know before where we will go and more or less which way we will go there...

If they walk by your side, companions would have to always drop back at every cave or doorway etc, then race to get back beside you again. Only to repeat this at the next door or narrow passage or ramp or bridge etc.

I would love to have a companion menu to set follow distance and aggression like in other Bethesda games. Make companions Totally Passive, Passive other than Heal or Buff, Aggressive only after I engage, and then Beserk where they attack any and all in Line of Site.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Yeah, but that's hardly possible in ESO, is it?
