Port to Belkarth, grab the quest, pop open a treasure chest, port back, grab gold box... done and done. Get tickets and get out of Dodge.
I usually pickpocket for boxes, but this year some of the boxes have 20-30 plus items in them (stacks of mats mostly), which will eat up your puzzlingly unreasonable 140 (with max passives) item laundering limit very quickly. So you can't even steal as effectively as usual.
Definitely the least desirable of the events, by far.

I am confused. What treasure chests have that many mats/items?

It doesn't have to have mats in it. Just open it and go back and collect your gold event box.

For the last few years I've been doing just the minimum required for getting my daily tickets and golden event coffer, after which I go back to my regular activities in the game.
The only exception is Whitestrake's Mayhem or the Imperial City celebration, because I enjoy the increased Alliance Points and Tel Var Stones in those events.

That is why some solution other than just more crates is needed. A good reason "why" to work in the event is better.
I might do more here, but grouping is not top of my list, even though I am glad to jump in a group taking down world bosses and events.

With gold road having just released on console, event feels really badly timed .

See, I actually feel like it's well-timed for console players, since they had just enough time to play through the Scribing quests, after which they should be able to take good advantage of the 10% discount when buying grimoires.
On the other hand, most PC/Mac players probably already bought all of the grimoires before the event began.

Console players got Gold Road 2 days before Zenithar event. I haven’t even finished the scribing quest line yet.
How is that good timing?

Well, it took me over a week to finish the Scribing questline because I wasn't rushing it, but a lot of players zipped through it right away. People play at different speeds, as well as prioritizing the available content differently.
But the event lasts for nearly 2 weeks, and once you've completed the Scribing questline you can buy all of the grimoires. I'm not sure, but you might even be able to buy some of them before completing the questline.
Anyway, I bought all of the grimoires at 10% off because I waited until after the event started, even though I play on PC and completed the questline well before the event began. It's up to each player to decide when to do what, and which purchases they're interested in making (if any) during the 10%-off window. The first time this event was held, it was player housing for me; but the second time I took advantage of the discount to buy certain expensive items with Tel Var stones. This time I'm more interested in buying the grimoires and monster gear from the Golden.
