Help with combos

I'm still having a hard time with combos, which I understand is a vital part of more advanced playing. I've watched several tutorial videos but apparently I'm either not watching the right ones, or my old brain just can't grasp something in the concept. So, that said, here are my questions:
  • What exactly triggers a combo?
  • What counts as "in play" for that suite? (i.e. - Agents only, anything in the cooldown pile, etc.) I'm guessing it's agents only but would like confirmation.

Thanks in advance to anyone who offers helpful advice - it's appreciated!

Combos are playing cards of the same color to trigger additional effects. Think of it like playing cards of the same suit ♦️♦️♠️♠️♦️

"in play" cards are your agents, and any cards "in play" cards pile. The agents will remain in-play until something happens to them. The "In play" cards go to your cool down pile at the end of your turn.

So, for example, say I get two crow cards - one with a "Combo 1 - gain 1 power" and the other with a "Combo 1 - gain 2 power". Neither is an agent, both get flipped into my cooldown pile. Does that mean I should get 3 power at that point? Or would that only happen if I have a crow agent active on the table?

If it went into the cool down pile, it would not trigger anything.

If it went into the played cards pile, you'd get 3 power.

The combo 1, 2, 3 etc are about the number of cards of the same suit needed. It doesn't matter which of those cards is being played, it just needs to be the same color. So combo 3 would need 3 cards of the same suit played.

The played cards are the ones that you've played that turn. You are currently benefitting from their effects.

The cool down pile are cards that are no longer available for use (until they get added to your deck again).

Ah ok, I had those two switched around in my head then. Thank you for the explanation!

So, in case this helps anyone else, my problem with combos was the Auto-play feature. When that's enabled, it plays each card from right to left, only stopping if the card makes you choose between two actions.

Once I turned that off and could play cards in the order I preferred, I started seeing instant combo results.
