Theories about lag

I have only seen one instance of lag since returning and it was extreme. And it was at Cyrodil and ONLY when a certain group of enemy players were around. Not sure how this worked but they were on that hill north of Bleaks and the minute you went up there you lagged. I pulled back and went around and there was no lag. Not sure exactly how these lag switches work but I know for a fact I have been hit by players in Cyro using lag switches. On that day every time that group of players was around, there was a lot of lag. I went down to BRK where there were 3-4X more players. No lag. I have seen this happen multiple times over the years. I am 100% certain there are players in Cyro that use some form of lag switch. Because I only see lag around a particular group.

Ok as for "other" lag, I have seen none in that last week of playing except around that one group of players. I think one of the problems is the stated minimum requirements to play this game. AND a player's internet connection. I play on a decent computer (Alienware Aurora R16 Gaming Desktop Intel® Core™ 14th Gen i9 14900KF (24-Core, 68MB Cache, 2.4GHz to 6.0GHz Thermal Velocity Boost, upgraded 64 ram, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4090, 24 GB GDDR6X and liquid cooling (added somewhere) because I've always been advised to have liquid cooling for games). I rarely see lag, even a cyro where there is a faction stack.

Another thing is internet connection. I once played with a GM that refused to pay for a higher speed internet connection. And the game was so laggy for him he quit. Some of the techies on discord told him to upgrade his internet package but he would not. I play on a dedicated business line that has the highest speed available (and we have 2 lines, my game is the ONLY application running on "my" line).

I don't recall ever lagging in a dungeon or overland content. Occasionally I will get a disconnect but not often (once or twice a month) I I play on full graphic settings except particle density because I don't like it. I've played MYM with no lag issues.

Any thoughts?

Well, I'm running on a 2 year old computer that was top of the line when purchased, and I have a top tier internet package, confirmed that I'm getting the upload and download speeds I pay for via various online speed test sites.

I still get really bad lag, desync, and rubberbanding at times.

Also, on at least two occasions I had lag, desync, and rubberbanding in tandem with another party member - like at the exact same moment. Given we were playing from opposite sides of the continent/from different countries... I am inclined to say the issue was 100% server side.

My connection is perfect for any game, and even though my laptop is not the latest best, I've never had any lag issues in all the years I'm playing ESO on it, except for after the latest maintenance that was extended on EU server for 2 hours.

I'm on PC EU. After all I've experienced personally and read in the forum stated by other people, I confirm that the issue is on the server's side and it's widespread and same for everyone affected regardless of country, computer spec, Internet connection etc.

https://www.speedtest.net/result/16311806123 - I don’t know, maybe the internet connection is just too poor. What should the bandwidth be to prevent ESO from lagging? What do your tech guys recommend—should it be 1 Tbps or 2 Tbps?

Isn’t a GeForce RTX 4080 + Intel i7-14700K + 2 SSDs + 64GB RAM enough for this game? Should I also upgrade my computer if it's already inadequate for this game?

It's not a "you" issue. Don't go out and buy more hardware it will literally have zero impact.

A couple of days ago I had some big issues with the game receiving my input then I remembered that my upload was low (on auto negotiate 7-9mb`s) so I troubleshot the problem by going into the Device Manager and tweaking the Speed and Duplex. I tried the 100mbs full duplex and got the upload to 12-14mbs. I tried the 100mbs half duplex 11-13mbs upload. Now with the previous 2 settings at 100 the game ran like crap. So then I put it on 1.0g with 11-12mbs upload and it runs better but there is still lag not as much. Check and see if your network adapter is on auto negotiate, you may want to switch. The upload is my problem maybe yours.

In the reddit AUA, Rich shared that some of the server issues have been due to DDOS attacks, which definitely raised my eyebrows a bit. It made me start wondering who would do that and why. Sharing my personal list is probably not productive, though.

I am not surprised. There have been a few salty players who did those in the past. Messed up imo.

My theory with Cyrodiil lag is that it’s a bunch of things, some big some small.

    1. Groups in a small space all spamming spells. Groups in the past did this on purpose to lag out the server so bad it caused rollbacks. Not saying that happens now but just evidence that it messes with the servers.
    2. A large number of people all in the same keep and the game has to render all of them, all their spells, all the NPC’s and their spell and also calculate what’s up with keep walls
    3. Ddos attacks
    4. I don’t think the que system helps, just more calculations
    5. Volendrung and destructible bridges and milestones
    6. 10 years of band aids fixes and quickly done code. Not exactly ZOS’ fault… just what they had to do to get content done.

It's not just the DDOS attacks themselves, but the technical responses that various governments are implementing to what they see as 'foreign interference'. You can speculate all you like about the 'who' part, but as you say, it wouldn't be productive.

Given that it all started after the whole PTS thing, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that was the trigger for the attack. Some people truly have nothing better to do with their time. :/

I've mentioned DDoS attacks, certain players and their guilded "ball groups," and some of the other plausible reasons listed here and in other threads. Everything that I mention is discounted, but accepted if someone else states it as a fact.

Ergo, the reason for the lag and every other issue is simple... CICADAS. :D
