as soon as you get the sanctuary buff (the bluish-purply glow) you become immune to dmg
you are also unable to cast any skills while you have this buff

That is not true. You can take damage from an effect (DOT) already on you when you enter. I have died in the protected area, unable to heal myself.

never seen that happen, ive saved myself numerous times by getting into the protected area as i was dying from dots, i just waited for all the dots to expire and then stepped out of the sanctuary and healed myself
when i would snipe from the tower in the area district, i always liked to be in the middle of the platform with the side of the opening so i could dodge roll backward in the case i was taking too much heat (or to block meteors)
the only time ive seen someone take dmg from inside the safe area is from a summoned pet (warden bear or sorc pet), such as the nobles district when your in the area for the story quest which is a safe area, ive seen someone of enemy faction come in and run around trying to avoid the bear while i was questing on my warden because it could still hurt them (not sure this was ever fixed because its a really rare case), but as far as i can tell you are protected from all player-sourced dmg (pets dmg is not considered player sourced, thats why they cant trigger procs)

Well I died earlier (as noted) to poison on the ground, even after entering the "safe area" so it is not working for me. The poison kept ticking until I died.
Someone must have gotten their jollies out of that too. I didn't have much tel var either since I was mostly just sitting on the platform.

nope, you should be protected as soon as you get sanctuary, ive dodge rolled into the sanctuary zone while having at least 5 dots on me before (ele sus + poison injection + plaguebreak) with <20% hp remaining and i didnt take any further dmg while i was under sanctuary, even though i couldnt heal i wasnt taking dmg either, i just waited for the dots to expire before i left the sanctuary zone and healed up
ive also blocked the dmg from meteors getting into the sanctuary zone fast enough

You are wrong. I died from a dot that continued to hit for several ticks AFTER I entered the protected area. Thus you are nuked if you run back in since you can't stop the dots. I had this directly happen to me so it is not just a claim.

i dont know what to tell you then, what im describing is exactly what happened to me, and i used this tactic liberally while i was in a tower snipe phase during multiple IC events (its too hard to do tower sniping any more especially with people using frozen gate lol)

Maybe it has something to do with how you get infected or the specific platform?
Either way, you should be able to heal in that area and summon pets.

There are plenty of sets and skills that will reflect or reciprocate damage upon your attackers. Occasionally, during events where the unskilled or PvP resenters will try to cheese and snipe from the "safety" of the platform, and I will gear up accordingly and stand around under the enemy base.
It's quite amusing to see how many kills I can get this way, without actually directly firing upon the sniping opportunists. And unfortunately for their faction mates, their actions often trigger AoE retaliation that takes out innocent bystanders that are just happening to stand too close to the perpetrators. And to be fair, here's part of one setup that is pretty effective: Use Crystallized Slab, Ice Furnace, and Infernal guardian plus one other set and 2 other skills that shall remain unnamed, if you don't mind blowing up several people on the platform at once.
And regarding the Sanctuary buff negating DoT damage? I've seen several people run to the trapdoor, turn blue and die from a DoT. I've even seen people climb down the ladder and blow up from Curse when they spawn in. Is that a bug? Probably. But it does happen.

I've had a few odd things happen in PvP, but usually when the game was laggy. I wouldn't worry unless it's happening consistently.
