Can you critically damage shields?

I know since Murkimire it says you can do critical damage to shields but all I see when I am fighting Sorcerers is white damage numbers. Why is this? Does this mean that they can't be critically damaged when they have a shield?

I'm trying to find a way to counter this meta as on my Templar I feel so inadequate regarding damage, no matter what I run. I have tried numerous set ups and am an experienced Templar main playing arlt a good level, however a lot of the time the class and damage feels so impotent.

I thought yellow indicated crit, white normal. Only the exclamation mark for crit dots?

Yellow is for direct damage crits, but the exclamation mark is for all crits, direct (yellow), dots, heals, brackets (sheild hits)

Look for the ! by the damage number instead of the colour to indicate that said hit was a crit as the colour of the damage number tends to be tied closer to what kinda thingy it is (healing, sheild hit, dot, incomming..ect)

as for trying to find a way to counter sheilds on templar in PvP
well, step 1: don't play templar, [snip]
