Charge / Stampede "stealing agro"?

Had a couple of tanks in a vet Sanity's Edge run on the 15th. Mobs were running around everywhere and main tank started telling the DPS with 2-handers to stop using charge / stampede because it was "stealing agro" off of them. As a result the offtank started saying it as well and getting irritated. I main a tank and have never had this be an issue. Ever. I do not think this is accurate at all and believe the original tank who started saying it just didn't want to accept responsibility for not taunting stuff. However, I figure I'll ask and not just assume. So is this a thing or is this a situation where the main tank didn't want to take responsibility and blame others?

I am pretty sure that they don't know what they're talking about. I've heard of people getting yelled at for healing too much as if that somehow steals taunt too. Just... use your taunt skill.

Maybe the tank was thinking the DPS had tormentor on?

I considered that option, and from the log I was given it shows no one in Tormentor.

It may not be so much "stealing" aggro as there is no AoE taunt in ESO and it is not really a game designed for tanks to taunt everything. If everyone makes a nice stack behind tank, tank can ignore less dangerous mobs to concentrate on taunting more deadly mobs and chaining in archers/mages. Those untaunted mobs will then just come to stack on their own , because whoever they randomly target will be near tank if everyone stays stacked. And then they can get snared or rooted or whatever as they come to group. Because there is no AoE taunt but there is AoE crowd control. But if DPS are zooming all over the place and engaging mobs on fringes of fight, tanks now have to work harder to get everything stacked.

I have no idea if that is what actually happened. But I have met tanks who don't like excessive use of gap closers if it causes fight to get spread out and interferes with stacking mobs for a nice AoE burn. So not so much "stealing aggro" as, "Great. Now I have to taunt/pull stuff I don't have to worry about in cleaner, more organized groups."

"Stealing aggro" might be a bit misleading because some people might think it means taunt. Perhpas they meant aggroing the monsters before the tank does.

Now with the two new dungeons to farm I subject myself to the calamity that is pug runs. I usually don't tank but as tanks go through the queue fastest, I have been farming as a tank. Many, many pug runs the past few days. Luckily you can farm them on normal so it doesn't matter that much, but the past 40ish runs I think only once both DDs and the healer (that was, in fact, a real healer) waited for me to get my buffs up and get the aggro before engaging.

The other 39 times either a lightning heavy attack or a stampede DD goes past me when running towards the trash mob, the hollow sentinel runs in some other direction and I need to change my direction to try to taunt it before it pummels the DDs.

It's especially lovely when we come to a boss, I try to run behind it, while doing my prebuffs, a stampede DD flies directly to the boss before I have time to taunt the boss, gets one shotted and then types in group chat "tank taunt?"

Every now and then I'm running my (real full) tank instead of my DD's and this is exactly what I'm loving too. Sometimes even healers are running straight to a boss and - because of attacking them - they are taking their aggro before I can taunt them. Depending on the boss I'm using in a case like this a taunt like inner fire while I'm running towards the boss but sometimes especially if it was a healer I just stop and wait for them to die. And write in the group chat something like "hey, great that you are took over my job, will wait here until you are finished".
