Consuming trap broke ?

Hi all , i tried to play a setup where i would use consuming trap in order to be able to get a ton of sustain back when killing easy monsters . ( i get around 8K back per kill and 5k health and 4 k stamina)
In overland zones i test this on random monsters and it works well
But when working on a boss (in northern elsweyr - nightmare plateau) , this does NOT seem to work …?
I let myself almost go out of magicka and attack someone with consuming trap and then kill them off …
But i dont see anything really happening. Its like the stam/mag/health is NOT given to me after them dying. Am i overlooking something ?
Do i need empty soul gems for this to work?
Is it a specific boss which negates that power ?
Does it not work on bosses and their mobs ?
