replacement, update, or "PEBCAK": SmartCast addon - press to target, release key to cast

I used to use the "SmartCast" addon, which allowed pressing an action button to start the "target a ground-effect spell" process, and then cast it when the key was released. This is the style of casting I very much prefer; both the ESO "quick" option, and the double-press-release targfetting mode are less pleasant for me to use.
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to get it working: it simply stops the abilities being cast at all. The mod itself hasn't updated since 2020, and none of the work-arounds or comments suggest any way to get it back up and going.
I don't know if there is an alternative out there, though I have searched ESOUI and failed to find one, or if there is some trick I have missed to get SmartCast working again. ...but, I really, really miss this one addon, and I kind of don't want to try and learn enough about what changed to go ahead and fix it myself. Save me?
