Hello.

Sorry I got a little exciting earing that decade badge of honor. However I did wish to ask, as title suggested, will there be a fullstand alone movie version of this game? An official version and all CGI of course. . . ?

As far as I know neither Bethesda or Zenimax have said anything about an Elder Scrolls movie.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone from a movie studio had contacted them to ask, because everything is getting turned into a movie these days, but even that is just speculation, if anyone has done it I haven't heard about it.

Just yesterday I finally convinced my girlfriend to watch the Warcraft movie with me and she absolutely loved it.

With a Fallout TV show along the way, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to expect one for the Elder Scrolls. There are so many different timelines that it could engage in… imagine one themed around Alessia freeing the Nedes?

Feels like a movie would only be able to speed through the base game main quest. TV show is a better option that allows full exploration of all major DLC stories and building a coherent world.

    Congrats on the decade.

I don't think they'll do a movie for the game as a whole as video games and movies have different strengths and weakness as mediums.

Part of what people like about video games is the choices they get to make.

Having an official film version of the game would override the choices players make.

That's a good point., Maybe doing a movie as a prequel to tie into the game instead. Tell the Varen story, but avoid the big spoiler that comes in the game. Best of both worlds.

I'd love it but feel they'd vanilla it up and lose the juicy Elder Scrolls lore. I'd still love to see it though, especially a nice 3 hour one. A series of series would be better though as you can get more in or both series and movies.

Right, this is why I mentioned Alessia’s slave rebellion, they could even do a series centered on Tiber Septim’s ascent to godhood.

There are so many phenomenal origin stories that could be explored.

Haven’t heard anything about a movie but that would be sick. I’ve read in articles that they’d love to do one.

There was also a rumor circulating a few years ago that Netflix was developing an Elder Scrolls TV series.

There are much better companies that an Elder Scrolls themed show could be outsourced to other than Netflix.

Just look at the phenomenal job that HBO did with Game of Thrones, or Amazon did with Wheel of Time.

When I think of Netflix I think of The Witcher and that entire fiasco with Henry Cavill and how he felt that “artistic liberties” were being taken to deviate away from the original source content.

If Netflix makes it, expect the show to be terrible. They should outsource it to a company that cares more about the product.

Yeah, I wouldn't want Netflix to handle TES at all. Even if they did happen to do a good job they'd either cancel it after one season or we'd have to wait the same amount of time we've been waiting for TES 6 for season two. Netflix did a good job with The Sandman and Stranger Things but the space between seasons is long.

I think Amazon is doing Fallout so that should be okay. I'd rather Amazon handle TES than Netflix.

That's sort of how I feel. I'm not even very impressed with The Hobbit and LotR movies; watched them once, went back to the books.

Obviously good is in the eye of the beholder, but I'm not much of a movie or tv person at all. Books are my escape outside of TES including ESO of course.

If it's not like the Warcraft movie it could be great. There are a lot of factors to consider though. What era? What region? Which lore? Animated or live action? Serious tone for the adults or appealing to a younger audience with simpler characters and plots and more action?

Personally I did not like the Warcraft movie all that much. Wasn't bad but was disappointing. I think Elder Scrolls needs to have a serious treatment that goes above and beyond Warcraft into the style of the Lord of the Rings cinematography. It needs to be treated the way a novel would be treated, not a videogame.

Give me a live action big budget Morrowind movie. The lore is deep and philosophical and the setting alien enough to captivate audiences without turning them off from the whole thing.

I too had heard of the Netflix discussions but that was a long time ago. To be honest, I'm not sure I see the appeal of Elder Scrolls as a movie or TV series. The lore often struggles with the back-of-a-napkin way in which it was initially worked out for Arena. Great for a game. Not so much when the only thing you have going for you is storytelling (ie TV or film) and so the sometimes generic and highly contrived nature of some of the lore would come to the fore. But, well, sometimes (very rarely -- Arcane,* Castlevania) the visual adaptation is allowed to escape poor source material to good results.

    * By the end of Arcane, though, you did have to wonder how a second season will ever work, given that they'd regressed to computer gameyness. Which was a shame when they'd done SO MUCH to stop it being a silly cartoon about people with special weapons hitting each other.

While that is true, there is spots in lore where they could adapt to the screen fairly easily. Examples:

    Talos conquering Tamriel
Ysgramor and the 500 vs Snow Elves
    The Dragon War
The Umbriel books (Infernal City and Lord of Souls)
Kyne’s Challenge: A Hunters Companion book

Plus, Dragon Age has an animated series on Netflix which isn’t too bad. Still prefer another place tho.

I agree that a story from TES lore or an original story would work better than trying to directly adapt the story of any of the games because then they could write it so the overall length, pacing etc. fit the format.

I also think the amount of lore isn't necessarily a problem because people watching it don't need to know absolutely everything. Even people playing the games don't need to know everything. You could go through an entire game, enjoy it and get a lot from it without ever knowing the history of the early Dawn Era or all of Vivec's Sermons or why some people think the khajiit deity Azurah is not the daedric prince Azura or dozens of other bits of info. Just like how I know there's a lot I don't know about Westeros or...whatever the world of the Witcher is called in spite of having watched both those shows. (The books are on my reading list, but it's a long list.) The important thing is working in the relevant lore in a way that that doesn't feel too forced.
