companion questions

So I did a small amount of reading, I know you need to do a quest to unlock companions for that chapter.
but how do each of these companions hold up to the game? which ones go good with different classes?
and where do you find the start quest for each one? can you get them early game?

As long as you own the chapter for the companion, you can get them as early as you want.

Bastian and Mirri are from the Blackwood chapter.
Isobel and Ember are from the High Isle chapter.
Azandar and Sharp are from the Necrom chapter.

If you go into the collections section in game, and click on allies, then companions, and mouse over each of the available companions, you can accept their quests from that menu. (If you're on console, I don't know precisely how it works, but I would guess you can still activate the quests from that menu).

Each companion can play each of the three roles--dps, tank, or healer. I don't know which one might be best for which role; I just use the ones I like the most.

So I'm currently leveling a stamina archanist. I can't decide if i want a tank or healer companion. what would you guys suggest?

I've had a lot of fun with companions in both those roles.

For my straight dps characters, it's great having a companion healer for some of the harder content.

My character who is paired with a tank companion has dps on the front bar and heals on the back bar, because I've found that to work best when facing off against tougher foes like world bosses or dungeon bosses.

For regular questing out on the landscape, either role for companions works out pretty well, I've found.

So I've decided to make issable a healer. Where do I get a good companion restoration staff and gear for her?
so ive got the resto staff and the light armor. if i equip her with the healing staff skill, and my second skill as a healing skill, can she still level up over the exp i get? or does she have to do damage and kill enemies' herself to level up?

PC EU: Magblade (PvP main), DK (PvE Tank), Sorc (PvP and PvE), Magden (PvE Healer), Magplar (PvP and PvE DD), Arcanist (PvE DD)
PC NA: Magblade (PvP and PvE every role)

Companion exp comes from the kills you make while they are following you. You get gear from mobs or guild stores. For a healer, Powered or Quickend are the preferred traits. Light Armor gives the best benefit, but a heavy chest and legs would not be a bad thing to have.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

i have more use out of the tank/healer companions to provide support (tank works good if your character is dps or healer, healer companion works best with a dps character)

i havent really had much need of a dps companion, except with a tank character to provide extra dmg, and you being a tank have an easier time keeping the enemies off the companion
