Please Give Us the Option to Mute Players Without Blocking Them

On console [PS NA]. In one of my raid guilds there is a member who will not stop talking in raids. Its as if he discovered "Truly Tasteless Jokes" for the first time, mixed with political humor and sexual innuendo. Its a barrage of words where the only time he is not talking are the brief moments the raid leader or healer is doing call outs, for the entire trial. But, one of the better main tanks in the guild, who is often a raid leader, laughs at everything he says, thus encouraging the behavior. The two appear to be inseparable as they are always in the same trials.

Booting him from the guild is not an option, mostly because he is friends with several of the officers. Others have complained, but it doesn't stop. When someone tells him to chill, he only gets worse, like a child who wants his mother's attention. He hasn't got the hint that everyone else in group is not responding to him.

Aside from his behavior, he's a pretty decent DD, and his Ed McMahon sidekick is a solid tank. So running a trial with them will be successful as long as you don't lose your mind listening to him.

I don't want to report him, as that's just weak. Blocking him is currently the only way to do this on console, but if I block him, that would hurt my ability to join groups in the guild as he often sends the invites over group chat. The guild is solid and I don't want to leave it, either, as he is the only player in the guild that behaves this way.

A mute button for players would solve all of this. I swear we used to have one of these, right? Where you could turn off another player's mic in group chat? I can't find that anymore. Does anyone else have any other ideas I could use in the mean time?

That's one of the reasons why a lot of people like to use the playstation party instead of ingame voice chat. Ingame chat is buggy for a lot of players, the sound quality is way better in the party chat, and a while ago we got the option to adjust the volume of every single player in the party.

With all the nervous talkers out there it's one of the best quality of life updates playstation ever gave us.

Good to see PS has a better option as the in-game VOIP I have seen in other games was always lower quality than third-party solutions.

On Xbox, we have access to In-Game chat, Party chat, and as of this year… Discord.

I do agree with wanting the ability to mute people in-game, but on Xbox you can select their Profile and mute them directly, which effects your ability to hear them in-game too.

Yeah Discord has the option to mute people or lower their volume, if you coordinate raids with discord perhaps use it for coms as well?

I find lowering annoying people down to barely hear them is a lot less offensive than muting them.

That way if they have anything important to say, everyone will be quiet so they can be heard, naturally.

Yes, it’s great to be able to adjust each player independently. There is always at least one person you have to set to max and you can still only barely hear them, and others talk loud so you can turn them down.

My other guilds use the party, and yes, it much better and more reliable than game chat. For some reason, this guild uses game chat, maybe because some players' settings are so they can't do party chat. Forgot to include that in my original post

Discord is okay. Might need to suggest we go back to that. Just wish they could put it in ESO itself

If people are talking about very inappropriate stuff in the voice chat. I'll turn my computer's volume off.

If it continues I'll just leave the guild.

The guild is a very strong guild and it is literally this one guy. To the point I would rather him play garbage music than endure his "jokes."

I would drop out of chat if possible, and I can on things like Hel Ra, but I like callouts on harder trials. Turning off audio is not an option.

I was in the same situation a few years back in world of warcraft.

    Story:
I was in a decent guild that's always doing stuff in the game. One person who was the guild master kept on talking about extremely inappropriate stuff in the chat. It made me feel very uncomfortable. I told the guild master my concerns but they continued.

I can't control other's behavior and what they say. I thought of the things I can do and it was difficult. I reported and blocked the guild master. Then later I left the guild. I was upset afterwords for a bit and then I felt relief. Months later I joined a new guild and explained. The new guild's guild mastet respected me and my boundries. Turns out that new guild were way more kind, respectful, awesome, active, and fun than the previous guild.

I understand how frustrating that incident is. I agree there needs to be mute certain player functions for the game. If someone is doing something that makes you feel uncomfortable, its ok to block and report them (in some cases leave the situation; this case the guild). Doing the right thing is the best thing.

Yeah I guess if this person is in a support role you can’t just mute them anyway.

Normally guilds have some kind of statement about inappropriate behavior and inclusion. I am surprised that no one has called him out on it already.

It’s not like you are in a friend group either, it’s a guild sponsored activity.

But it's not just this one guy.

If the GM and Officers are allowing this to continue despite all the complaints they have received then they are just as guilty as the offensive member. I would never stay in a guild thats leadership has such little regard for its members.

Nothing wrong with blocking a person that is affecting your enjoyment of a product you paid for. Not to mention the benefits of removing that stress from the equation. It's not anyone's place to decide what offends you. It seems like you've tried to talk to people about it as well, and no one is respecting what you are asking.

If guild leadership isn't respecting your wishes, I agree with others here that it may be time to leave and find a more respectful situation. Your experience should be the best you can find in your limited time here.

Outside of an actual built in mute function, really all we can do is use third party voice apps. It's unfortunate that the basic functionality isn't there.

Wish I could offer a more specific solution outside of leaving the guild, but I can't. Sorry.

I think the only advice I can give you is moving to discord with your group as you can mute/lower the volume on certain people. There is one player in my trial group who always watches Spanish tv shows in the background and I lowered their volume so I wouldn't get distracted in trials. (I mean it sounds interesting but I don't understand Spanish ^^)
So I get where you're coming from.
Hope you can find a solution and maybe send an ingame report about adding this feature on Playstation in the future.

Yeah, dude could be singing bad karaoke non-stop and someone simply wanting to mute the unending “And IiiiiIiiiIII-eeeee-IiiiiiiiiIIIII will always love yooooooOoOouuuuuooooUUUU” during a trial without losing the otherwise functional trial work the dude is doing is not an unreasonable ask nor a dictation on society’s soapboxes.

This would be amazing. I prefer to only block people who are being deliberately offensive, and would love to merely place temporary/permanent mutes on distracting people who are nervous talkers/excessive talkers/can't stop making the same kind of unfunny jokes over and over and OVER again.

[Snip], the in-game voice chat on console has always been lacking in functionality, and often completely broken.
I don't honestly see that changing - so your best bet is seeing if you can convince your group to move over to party chat - then you have individual volume controls as well as mute

To be honest, if you're planning on doing any dlc hardmodes, it's better to look for another guild. In my experience, groups that cannot keep the comms clear during the raid struggle much more than needed. Even if they are talking non-stop about fluffy kittens, it doesn't matter. People need to be able to focus on mechanics, and constant chatter is distracting.
If you talk to officers about the situation again, it's better to emphasize this aspect. [Snip].

You may just have to be harsh and tell him to "Be Quiet" in words not quite like that. Some people just don't get it and it takes a lot to get through to them.

About a year ago I left a guild I had been in for a couple of years because a very offensive player joined and our new leadership wouldn't do anything to curb his behavior. He had an offensive name which he was forced to change then he quit playing after less then a month of joining the guild. So they lost a loyal productive member and gained nothing over not doing the right thing.

I was sad to leave a guild I really enjoyed up to that point but I lost respect for our leadership when they didn't correct a bad situation. Then I found the guild I'm in now and it is so much more organized and supportive of its members. So there are good guilds out there and no one has to stay in a guild with bad leadership.

This, now in Cyrodil the PvP guild I'm in talks about a lot of crap as its lots of low intensity stuff like riding or taking resources but that can change fast.
