Event Voting has Become Toxic?

onyxorb

I figured, I would put this on the Forums in hopes that others might chime in?

This is in regards to the current 'event' where we have to vote between the 'book' and the 'music box'.

My 'opinion' is that having events where we get something based on an in game vote, has turned the game toxic.
I've noticed that people are calling each other all sorts of names in zone and guild chats, and even in streams and other media associated with the game.
It has become full blown back and forth arguments, and it's seriously taking the fun out of the overall Necrom event.

If we DO continue with events where a vote is needed, then, could we add some changes such as:
* the NPC that accepts your vote should have a 'DEFAULT' response that doesn't vote for 'either' option
* the NPC that accepts your vote should let you know WHAT your vote is actually going for (choice 'A' is for 'this' item, choice 'B' is for 'that' item)
* an option to PREVIEW the choices IN GAME somewhere (Impressario maybe?)

Thoughts?

How are people finding out who is voting for what unless they tell them? I haven't noticed any toxicity and have been casting my votes for the book all event long. I kinda like the mechanic.

I do agree that it should be more obvious in game what exactly people are voting for, though.

i havent noticed any toxicity either

most of the comments i seen in zone chat are:
    • LFGs for bastion nymics
    • asking where to get the parchments
    • asking what to do with the parchments
    • LFGs for WBs, or other daily sharing
    • normal zone chat (if you could call it normal)

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

We've had some discussions in my guilds, all have been light hearted, with most agreeing whatever their preference either item would still please them!

I would like the book but would be equally happy with a free music box. <3

I probably should have screen shot some of the conversations. Was too busy running around farming and getting to world bosses.

Although 'most' of the negative stuff seemed to be in 'zone' vs. guild, so that probably is to be expected.

Also, some of the comments 'were' because people were yelling their choice in zone.

This has actually been one of the least toxic events imo. People are sharing quests. I haven't had a bad Nymic group yet, done over 20. Generally zone chat has been courteous. It's a rare thing.

Toxicity is a death kneel for a guild. Any guild with leaders with their salt would be clamping down on toxicity within their guild and quickly kicking out anyone who did not comply.

I had a rule for my officers in a guild I led well before ESO. If anyone starts drama and does not tone it down when you ask, kick them quickly and I will never second guess your decision. It only happened twice and they were never allowed back.

As for zone chat, it is pointless banter most of the time. I have it turned off as I have no need for most of what is said there.

In my experience, zone chat has always had and always will have the potential to be pretty toxic - doesn't matter what the topic is. I turned it off in my default chat tab a long time ago and have enjoyed the game a bit more ever since.

I haven't seen anything toxic about the vote in zone chat. What I did notice is how many people don't even know there's a vote going on and what they're voting for (as usual, it appears most don't bother to read the pages on ESO's website explaining events). I've seen #teambook and #teambox discuss their preferences calmly.

The only way anyone would know which sister/gift someone else voted for is if they told them, or if they were streaming their gameplay and their viewers saw which sister's name they clicked on. It shouldn't be anyone else's business who you voted for, so don't tell them, and if you're a streamer then don't let your viewers see you casting your vote.

I know there's also a thread in the forum about which one we want, so that's another way people might know.

Honestly, the poll on the event page seems to be holding steady at 63% to 37%, so I can't imagine anyone who wants the tome getting upset about the voting. I think I've already said (in the thread with the poll) which one I'm hoping for-- but I'll be happy with either one, and I would never harrass anyone else because I knew they've been voting for the other choice.

One thing about this sort of voting that I would recommend be done in the future is to restrict it to once per day per account, because otherwise players who have a large number of characters on multiple accounts and multiple servers can vote many times per day and skew the poll one way or the other in comparison to players who are voting only once per day. I'm voting twice-- one account and one character but on two servers-- which is twice as much as players who are voting only once. And I know there are players who are probably voting dozens of times more than I am per day. We should each get one vote, so that each our voices is just as important as everyone else's voice.

The event overall has been great, been easy to to get event tickets and groups for those doing Bastion Nymic.

I've even been pulled into vet SE which has been a lot better than I expected.

The only toxic part I've actually come across is the parts related to the book/musicbox voting.
Maybe some people are really zealous about the voting. It's very possible they are just a vocal minority of the population.

I think part of my original post would be better worded as:

The REST of the event has been a blast as most of you mentioned. Its just the portion related to voting for the book or musicbox which has been confusing and stressful.

PS I'm one of those people with poor memory that has a tab opened to https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/secretsofthetelvanni just so I remember who to vote for! LOL

    I have three predictions here:

    (1) Both items have, in fact, been designed.
    (2) Whichever one the players end up voting for, and getting for free, the other will be available in the Crown Store.
    (3) Both items will be available in the Crown Store at the same price, for the benefit of people who want whichever item they didn't receive for free (or the benefit of people who join the game just too late to benefit from this poll).

I reckon the votes will be unfairly skewed towards the book. It's the first option and many people will just click through to complete the quest and get the reward box without thinking. The options should be in a random order to help combat this

I do agree that the auto picked option when skipping through the text should not be one of the voting choices. If one were to look at the current winning item, it is indeed the one associated with the auto picked option when skipping.

Alternatively, the options should be rotated each day. Thus, each one would receive 'votes' from those who skip through the dialog.

I haven't seen any issues in game around voting that said, I agree with how they set it up isn't really ideal for a fair vote.

As soon as soon as I saw the spam turn in favored the book I told my friend the book would win, and it is by a large margin. I am pretty sure most people just think it is an even daily and are spam turning it in not knowing what the greater implications are.

I haven't noticed any toxic arguments over it. I mostly ignore anything that looks like drama in chat when I see it.

What I don't get is why ZoS decided to make it some kind of "competition" for something like this. Kinda dumb.
Why not just let the players CHOOSE which one they want?

Turn in X number of page stacks, then choose which of the 2, tome or music box, you would like to be awarded at the event's end.
Then everyone gets something they were happy to work toward, instead of some ppl wanting one thing but the majority push will give you the reward you didn't really want.

That's honestly an even better option for handling the reward.
They clearly have both items created, and we all know both are going to be in the crown store anyway.

Let us choose which one we want as our personal account reward.

AFAIK there is no preview of the items anyway. I vote for X but if I get Y I do not mind and likely will not buy the X from store.
I have not noticed any toxicity about voting at zone chat and I have spent enough time at Telvanni Peninsula and Apocrypha to finish the chest weekly endeavor and have extra Parchments for a week.

Sometimes it falls upon our shoulders; the unpleasant duty to educate certain people as to when it is not their call to make. All it takes is, when they attack the person, to make the very simple statement that someone else's feelings/opinion/preference/vote is

... "not your call to make."

I think that it is sort of sad that 35% of the players who bothered to vote actually "lose" and that feels a little divisive within the game. It could be indicated at the end of the 1st day that the tome was to win, so why bother after that if you wanted the music box?

Yeah, I think it might have been better, all round, to do both then let the player have whichever one they voted for - with the voting being just for fun because, narratively speaking, both sisters got pages and there's no overarching difference in design direction being served by the vote (e.g. such as whether to allow fictional sentient AI to underpin character development or not).
