Both, using pchat. My base game settings is character name. I want to change it now but uh… couldn’t find the setting.

It's considerably more immersive to see character names.

Interface, first option. Keyboard or Controller have separate displays, so you have to go into the interface menu for each if you're switching. You could also make Keyboard show User ID while controller show Character Names. Now that I say that, I should have put Both as an option; oh well too late.

For zone chat: character name. For guild chat: @ name. For content, like trials and stuff: @ name.

I only use display User ID because if I'm in a raid or dungeon I need someone to know who I'm talking to ASAP no matter which toon they're currently using in the raid. Using the user ID eliminates hesitation and provides clarity.

I used to do Character name but found that I recognize other players more by using User ID. I've run into a few players from the forums that I wouldn't have recognized if I was showing Character name.

Plus it's easier to know someone by one name rather than having to learn all their alt names, too.

Character name in most situations, but I have guild chat set to show account names so I know who people are no matter which character they're on.

We really should be able to turn on an option so we see both. My add ons in dungeons show character name but in group I see @name.

It's imperative in PVP that you see that @name. So why not give the option to see BOTH?

User ID 100% of the time. Character names are useless to me. Again, I say, to me.

Not sure if this is a base game option or from the rChat addon but I have it set up so that I see CharacterName(@AccountNameID) so I can see both. There are far too many people who play alts (myself included) to remember what alt belongs to which person's main and vice versa.

User ID. The only reason I can think for showing character name in chat is if you're in an RP guild.

The number of times I've seen players confused about who other people are referring to, or not realizing they're talking to the same person when someone logs, etc etc... they should really make @names default for zone chat, and anyone who wants to RP or just embrace chaos can switch it. Not the other way around.

Trials- username. When using Voice Chat, players you play with regularly will swap between characters. I'd rather refer to someone as Gella if their username is @Gella than have to switch between their character names of Scales-So-Thicc and Apollonia Lavinica just because they needed to swap from a tank to a healer. It's also incredibly confusing to the group.

PVP - character name. This is a personal choice, I still have user names up but I sill see people's names and refer to them as their names most of the time.

    guild chat: user ID
normal chats (zone, group, say, etc): character name
    nameplates: character name

usually i look at the @ names on the target bar since that shows both by default, or i can look at @ names in the group window if im in a party, but i still prefer seeing the character names in the party window/group chat

I used to have user tags displayed before my big ESO-break (5 years not playing) when I had regular guild raids with 2-3 different guilds.

Now I use character names because yes, they're a lot more immersive and often a lot less stupid ^^

also, I made the mistake of choosing a non-gender-neutral user name, which makes every character of the opposite gender seem a bit off xD
