I think the OP meant that people used to complain about purges before the Mara’s Balm nerf, and now they don’t. Which…is mostly false. While the mass purge was a pain, it was the spectacular healing that came with it that more people complained about. Wardens and Templars are still running around purging at will.
The thing is that purges aren’t worthless in the current meta. In fact, this Master’s Dual Wield/Vateshran/Maarselok clown show is exactly why purges are still vital. There just aren’t enough good ones. Most classes end up going without a decent cleanse unless they slot some ability that shreds their Magicka or Stamina in seconds.
With the Mara’s nerf, people said “screw it, I can handle some DoTs”. Little did they know…

Purges do nothing in the current meta other than dump your resources. The popular DoT proc sets apply far more effects than any active ability purge can remove, for far fewer resources. You're better off slotting another HoT instead.

Cleanses do still remove some effects, which is probably actually better for balance than removing all of them. Can you imagine the exact opposite complaint, proc/dot users coming to the forums to complain about how "1 button cancels out 100% of my offense!"? ZOS probably just needs to tone down this 1 particular build that so easily procs so many effects, or maybe buff cleansing a bit to counterbalance it.

I'm not saying they should remove everything, but the cost of casting a purge that removes ~4 negative effects is way more than the cost of abilities that add 5+ effects.
Ele Sus is free. There's no point in purging off the multiple effects applied by ele sus if they can throw them all back on immediately at no cost outside of a GCD. That's the problem. There's far too many abilities in this game that load up a target with negative effects at very little cost to the user.
