Please stop stealing taunt in group finder dungeons.

I made a real tank to use for RNDs and every single time dps are using taunts. Why are you doing this? You complain about fake tanks but you don't respect when there is a real one. Please at least check your skill tooltips and if it says the word TAUNT remove it or take the tank role when queueing so I don't get stuck with you in a group.

seems like this could be addressed in-game with your party members. i doubt many people on the forum are going to disagree with you that people shouldn't be stealing taunt, but you're likely complaining about users who don't use the forum and won't read your post.

yeah only a fraction of the playerbase probably even reads the forums lol

it also doesnt help for arcanists that the first skill in the solider line is also a hard taunt, that you would have to put on your bar to lvl up the skill line (sometimes accidents happen)

my view on this is if they steal taunt and die, its on them lol

Who is this post even addressing? Unfortunately, no one on the forums is likely to be able to provide any resolution to this matter; it seems like it would be best discussed with the specific people engaging in unwanted behavior.

That said, if OP does actually want some forum advice - I would suggest forming your own group to avoid being matched with random strangers who may exhibit random behavior.

And it certainly might be worth making suggestions to ZoS that could assist with new players making this mistake; such as reorganizing arcanist skills so that a taunt isn't one of the first things unlocked; adding a tutorial-type popup that appears the first time one slots a taunt, warning about what it does... and/or something very noticeable and clear in the tooltip specifying that a skill includes a taunt and is intended for tanks (instead of burying the taunt in the skill description).

The game generally does a very poor job preparing new players for group content.

The first skill in the Arcanist class skill line Soldier of Apocrypha is Runic Jolt, which taunts for 20 seconds. No other class has a class skill that taunts. Someone makes an arcanist, unlocks the first skill in each skill line to level, and they probably don't even realize they have a taunt on their skill bar.

ZOS, why does a level 3 arcanist need a taunt?

As other people said, it's probably due to Arcanist. That soldier of apocrypha skill is good for dps... Other than the fact that it taunts. Newer players might not even know what they're doing wrong. Not that that's a good excuse for people ignoring group mechanics.

Dragonknight -> Ardent Flame -> Fiery Grip (and the morph Unrelenting Grip)

I really like that skill ;)

Anyway, I have given up slotting a taunt skill in general (overland content), not only because of the wild firing Arcanists, but also because of all those Companions running around overland and such with taunt skills slotted. Recent Dragon fights in Southern Elsweyr were an overtaunt-chaos.

My mistake. And I've used that skill on DK. It unlocks at Ardent Flame level 30, so at least it isn't the first skill a new player unlocks on a DK. I'm still puzzled why ZOS made the first skill in the skill line Soldier of Apocrypha taunt.

companions will not use their taunt on something already taunted like at all, they cannot trigger taunt immunity as they will not taunt something already under a taunt effect

if the enemy gets taunt immunity that is 100% due to players

I'll take your word for it. So those situations I have seen, were maybe hiccups by software or rather high damage outputs by companions and a sloppy taunting by the relevant players.

    Edit - more an addendum:

    Found this thread
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en-gb/discussion/624681/major-annoyance-companions-with-an-ice-staff-can-steal-taunt
    and this paragraph is interesting:
I checked the skills - the other Companion skills that taunt (Provoke from the Sword and Board line and Savage Instinct from the Undaunted line) have a special restriction that they will not use it when the enemy is already taunted by a player. However Destructive Blast from the Destro Staff line does not have that restriction. Obviously it can't because the fire and lightning versions do not mess with taunt so they should still be able to be used, but the fact that Frost Staff Companions can steal taunt is a major annoyance to those of us who don't play as DPS mains.

Has there been a change since?

it states it specifically in the companion skills that do taunts that a requirement for use is the target is not already taunted

i dont think ive ever seen a dragon fight or harrowstorm end boss not be overtaunted unless almost nobody is there, even just 2 tanks being present can trigger taunt immunity if 1 of them is spamming say puncture

reading your edit, i dont know, none of my companions use a frost staff, and the ones that do use a destro staff dont use any skills from that skill line

so assuming that the companion taunt with ice staff still taunts, i still dont know if companions taunts count towards taunt immunity

According to the post there it is possible to get the taunt back without provoking taunt immunity. Then again, imagine one tank, one off tank and an ice staff companion "stealing" taunt, the off tank thinks the main tank is sloppy and taunts and the main tank taunts as well and so on... And add an inexperienced but curious player like I was, when I had that skill the first weeks. Pretty sure I annoyed quite some taunt-experts...

But surely you are right, there are many overland situations, where more than two taunt-skill using players come together and the result is not an organized one ;)
As said, I usually don't even have a taunt skill slotted within overland content - mostly only if requested.

The skill didn't use to have a hard taunt, didn't they add that change after they got rid of soft taunts awhile back? I remember relying heavily on the soft taunt during vet banished cells 2, Daedroth waves at the final boss.

As for people using taunts in dungeons did notice some time back a rise in the number of damage dealers using one of the morphs of the undaunted taunt for extra damage, long before they added the arcanists. Does seem odd adding a hard taunt to the arcanist so early in their skill tree though.

This reminds me of random dungeons when the ice staff heavy attack became a taunt, was awesome for tanking but of course people that dont read their skill descriptions had to ruin it for everyone and get it changed rip tanking again.

The problem is not that the soldier of apocrypha starting skill taunts, but that the tooltip does not explain what the heck taunt does.

Disagree. While that's also a problem, players MUST slot that skill to be able to use any other skills in the skill line. So, even if a player knew what it did, they'd have to slot it anyway and then avoid using it on anything that they can't handle aggro on. Mistakes would still happen. So, I think it should be able to be skipped on the bar entirely. If they swapped this skill with the second skill unlocked, it would solve a lot of people taunting accidentally just because they were trying to level the skill line.

Don't run your dungeons with people, which can't even be bothered with knowing what their own skills are doing (because that's sweaty elitist), and your problems will be solved at once. Simply stop pugging, take some real dds with you and enjoy smooth runs.

Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 9 years. 6 paid expansions. 24 DLCs. 40 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. It's not that hard.

Mate, are you sure? Because every fake tank in a dungeon run is always. Adps without a taunt.

I have never in my life seen a dps role slot a taunt.

There is an Arcanist ability which the base version does have a taunt, in which case, if that is relevant you'd need to specify as such.

In my support role career i met DDs with taunt many times, using it as a damaging skill. I do not see a problem in it, as it was always in base game dungeons.
