Why is our blocklist so small?

Any time you report someone for being a raging racist/bigot/just all round annoying person, support just tells you to block them.

That's great & all, but that's literally not possible with the way the block system is set up in game. We have such a miniscule block list limit & I'm trying to figure out wth for!, like it's a little text file of names that takes up ZERO SPACE AT ALL! so why is this list not infinite?!

While I agree it would be nice to have a larger block list, there definitely needs to be a limit.

For one thing, the only kind of text file that takes up "ZERO SPACE AT ALL" is an empty one-- and even that actually does take up some space, since space is needed to store the name of the file, its location on the disk, and all of its other file attributes and information.

And even if the file were stored locally and not backed up in any way on the servers, it would still take time to read the file, load its contents into memory, check it against incoming messages-- be they private whispers or public chat-- and filter out any messages coming from the "undesirables."

Database reality.... it's not really a text file, unless ZOS has some sort of hybrid philosophy going with the backend databases.

I find that people that I put on my Ignore list are almost always gone from the game after a little awhile, as I can unblock them after a few weeks and still don't see their garbage. My Ignore list contains only a small handful of players that seem to be able to evade getting banned over a long period of time, and for them I create a note about why they are permanently ignored.

tl;dr you're probably safe unblocking most people after a few weeks because they probably end up permanently banned.

Yeah, but all of the gold-and-crowns-for-real-money scammer spammers who get perma-banned just show back up with new account names, so it's a revolving door of deletions and additions to my ignore list. :(

I avoid that by having a chat addon that never allows the chat pane to show unless I click it myself. The LAST thing I ever want to see in a game is zone or area chat. So I never know the gold sellers are there. Thankfully.

It's true that it's an ever-revolving list, but leaving "ssfdkjsdf" on your Ignore list just needlessly takes up valuable space because they always end up banned and you'd never see them again anyway because they just create a whole new account. Gold scammers can usually be safely removed from your block list in a day or so.

I've been playing since 2014, with some breaks, and my ignore list isn't even a quarter filled. I've seen people add others to the list just for monologuing in zone chat without saying anything reportable, so it's clear some folks may be rather easy to upset. . However, I see no reason why others who use this tool more often than me shouldn't be able to block what displeases them. I may not agree with their blocking criteria, but they should still be able to ignore more people if they feel that to be necessary. 100 is a small number when you consider the sheer amount of players in this game and how many have been here for years.

This game definitely has its share of carebears that feel personally violated anytime they see something they don't disagree with

I've been blocked by people for not being the race they desire for veteran dungeons, talking about memes, asking for help about builds that they consider "meta trash", talking about movies and games they don't like, etc. Earlier this week someone said they were reporting me for saying the word "suck" lol (I was talking about how I love sucking blood from victims as a vampire) and they were dead serious about it.

These people are just wack jobs. And they always seem to relish in the drama too by publicly announcing in zone chat that they are ignoring you lolol

I still don't lose any sleep at all over the tiny block list we have inside the game, what I'm still surprised about is the miniscule block list we have in this forum. 12? Twelve? That number is really tiny considering who we can come across repeatedly on these forums. :(

In Cyrodiil I need a lot more for my blocked list on console. I think it is only 20. Wish I had the capability to do 100.

I keep posting this but never get any response from the devs about increasing our limit, which is tied to PSN not the game.

I've been playing for 6 years and never needed to block anyone. And im not a solo player. Doing all content, including vet dungeons and trials and pvp. Dunno how some people find so much drama that the block list limit is too small lol.

Same. I just outright ignore players. I do not feed them so they tend to just move on. I have rarely had to deal with the ignore list.

I think I have only spammers in my block. Block list could be implemented to store unlimited entries only locally in efficient to search format but I guess that kind of thing should be specced from start before writing the game. Obvious disadvantage is mass blocker having no access to their million player block list if logging in from another computer so perhaps its not worth it.

I understand perhaps on the forums, but how is 100 people not enough? I save my ignore list for people who are aggressively rude over multiple occasions, or say extremely bad things. I don't block people just because of a general dislike or something. I also don't block people just because they disagree with me. So, I don't have very many people on my list.

block lists should be client-side, saved to a cloud at the most. it should not be server-side with arbitrary limits.

Not in Cyrodiil. Some people spam zone text chat so you can’t see the callouts. I block them so the zc window doesn’t scroll so much and I can see.

Report the player, and then the blocklist will be used as it's meant to be used. If someone says things against the ToS then all you have to do is report them and they'll have their account actioned on and you won't need to block them. only reason i'd find to use block is if someone was sending a bunch of unsolicited whispers and never stopped, like an rmter or something; at which point it'd be report+block.

You're not doing your part in reporting the RMT bots or the toxic players then, report auto-blocks the players if it's for spam/trolling

Eh, I must have been thinking of the size of the forum's ignore list, which is a lot smaller than the game's block list.

I actually don't block legitimate players unless they're being extremely juvenile in zone chat, and then I usually unblock them a few days later. It's all the scammer-spammers who end up cluttering my block list, and as has been pointed out, it's usually safe to unblock them since they just get perma-banned anyway.
