It’s something a lot of players had been asking for year after year, and something people were used to having as they traveled through Tamriel in other games.

The astounding number of companions you see in towns, at wayshrines, and everywhere players congregate will tell you how popular the Companion system is, whether or not it appeals to you personally.

i like having combat pets lol

especially ones that you can customize and dont take up a bar slot, just the method of acquiring them is extremely annoying

seems like the same "lot of players" that have asked for other changes/additions in the past, that were not so well perceived by the "other lot of players" when it went live. I guess it is pretty subjective and depending on the people you play with. 95% of the people I play with either dont care at all or just get companions leveled and rapport up for the achievements, and then they dont see the sunlight again. which is one of the reasons you see companions - to get them leveled and probably get companion gear, in order to sell that junk for a hillarious amount of gold.

Aside from the "because players asked for it over the years and the Devs decided it fit their vision" answer you've gotten (which is correct), Followers are also a feature of the last major Elder Scrolls game Skyrim.

"I'm sworn to carry your burdens." - Housecarl Lydia

Followers were present to a much lesser extent in Oblivion. Fans of Bethesda's Fallout series, however, are used to a pretty robust Follower system.

There's plenty of other MMOs that have a form of Companions too, so it's hardly.unusual for the genre either.

So the players who asked for Companions were asking for ESO to include a role-playing aspect from the TES series as well as a successful combat tool from ither MMOs that enables solo or small groups of players to augment their numbers.

I'm still waiting for my giant battle chicken and its storage saddlebag. Maybe that's the future update they were talking about.

Why did ZOS decide not to give companions the option to wear visible helmets?

Tom Murphy, Zone Lead, answered this on page 2 of posted Q & A.

"Q: I just want to give them a hat so they don't look the same as everyone else... any thoughts on changing your stance on this?

TM: We do have discussions about the level of flexibility we want to give users on a Companion’s appearance “from the neck-up” – like hats, or different hairstyles. One of the early design considerations with companions was the balance between "identity" and "customization" for each companion. We wanted to give players as much freedom to customize their traveling companion, while at the same time keeping the identity of the companion the same. We ended up with "no hats" on companions because it hit that sweet spot - where players can make them look any way they wish, but the character and identity of the companion doesn't change because you always see their face."
