It's gonna be 20 years and no capes. The engine isn't built for capes. If they remake the game engine, then sure. But that probably won't happen either. Like, they don't even have flags that flap in the wind in-game, and that's just a cape too. But it doesn't exist because of the game engine and performance. If there's ever any capes, they'll be on costumes or polymorphs, and they'll be very limited.

This. Heck, even though I have been around for just a little more than two years I know capes will not happen. Only one cape exists and it is pinned to the character's rear end as in it does not flow and looks lame.

Engine and server limitations. Capes would require more physics calculations for every single player on screen, and would likely destroy performance.

Same engine as swtor and swtor has capes, robes, coats, and backpacks. Engine isn't the issue.

    So there's hope

Thsts very strange. So engine cant hold pre-rendered animated capes? Really? Why othr mmos can? Wow, age of conan and etc. We dont ask archeage-level of capes with real time physics, but at least pre-build animated ones like in wow\lotro. Modern PCs and consoles can run capes in 8 y.o game without fps drops.

    +1 for capes

You could have a really thick sabre cat pelt wrapped around you as a cloak. Thick enough to hide any clipping perhaps. Personally, I don't mind a bit of clipping. It's a video game for one and well, it just doesn't bother me lol. You have to learn to ignore those little things.

This is what I'm talking about (sorry I don't have a better screenshot but you get the idea).

And it clips badly there also.

Capes would be awesome! They really fit in with the period look of the game. The cloth physics in general in ESO are just awful and really limit how beautiful the clothes can be. These sort of graphics, which are purely visual, surely run only on the client so could be upgraded without impacting server performance.

The devs have said the Hero Engine was only used to get started on prototypes and art direction while the “production engine” was developed:

Here's a screenshot from a game with a cape-heavy IP, that also uses a completely custom engine that started as Hero engine.

Game director already stated several times it won't happen. Cape's physic in this engine is akward.

That shows that the Hero Engine can be customized in a way that allows for capes to be viable according to one developer. But we don’t know whether 1) ZOS’s production engine is actually a customization of Hero, or 2) if it is, whether ZOS customized it in sufficiently similar ways to the game you’re talking about to make capes perform similarly, or 3) if ESO’s engine can indeed handle capes similarly from a physics perspective (Hero derivative or not), whether ZOS is similarly satisfied with the performance cost for the effects produced, not to mention the resources required to develop capes and keep them QAed.

In a vacuum I am all for more choice for players and would like to see those who want capes get them - I would certainly consider using them myself if they performed well (I cannot underscore how enormous an if that is). But this game has enough serious performance problems right now (I encounter them daily) that I think achieving and maintaining proper functionality of what we currently have needs to be ensured before working on the engine to make cosmetics like this work well. But who knows? Maybe they will turn their focus to other things now that they seem to have set down their active work on the code rewrite/server multithreading in favor of the passive gains they are seeing from the hardware replacement. I do have to wonder where those resources are going to be distributed now.

Cloaks would be welcome, to me. And think, you could have a cloak that displays your guild if you wanted. A cloak wouldn't interfere with all peoples 'hard work' putting together an outfit 'just to be hidden' too.

Do understand ESO can't make them work, even though they make so many other stunning graphics work.

I'd have thought trying to wield a staff or great sword with a cape on would just get it tangled up, not to mention your bow - would be under or on top of the cape when stowed.

Capes are for superheroes, ESO is not a superhero game.
