In-game reporting needs adjusting

So, after being the victim of this myself, and seeing friends fall victim to it, and seeing people threaten to do it on the forums, I'm noticing an alarming trend with the in-game reporting system. Players have weaponized it (the reporting system) to be used against people they don't like or don't agree with, knowing their target will likely be auto-banned until the accusation can be investigated, which can sometimes take weeks/months. This is an abuse of the system and is completely unacceptable, and there has to be a way to protect people from this type of targeted harassment.
I know there will be responses like "If you weren't doing anything actually wrong, they wouldn't auto-ban you", and I wish this were true, but it hasn't been so far.
