There are many types of builds players can have that are different. Each build can be unique based on how it's used like pve, pvp, and hybrid. Also some are better than others based on class and skills.

This poll and its options is very general and doesn't quite go into to specifics.

It is optional to explain what your character's build is and/or how it works.

i have multiple builds and some have meta sets i believe, but some are just sets i like using for the funny effects like Unfathomable Darkness and Venomous Smite

I still find running Order's Wrath with Mother's Sorrow and Shadow mundus to be a great magicka build.

However, on my Arcanist I'm running Order's Wrath and Telvanni Efficiency to make better use of my companions. I lost 10% crit and 20% crit damage by having to go back to using Thief mundus, but even so, it still gets me through the content I enjoy playing quite nicely. In overland, honestly, companions don't really need the 50% cooldown reduction, but soloing world bosses and group dungeons, it definitely can save the day when you have a tank that can survive, or a healer that can constantly generate heals.

A mix because i dont live in trials or pvp so i need to have various setups, if i need to pug a trial its gotta be meta. But if im going to solo that will require something else for example.

As passionate theorycrafter which enjoys almost every part of the game I have various custom builds, but I also use meta builds for PvE endgame.

Restricting myself to a single build would be like wearing the same clothes for every occassion or like cooking with a single pot regardless the meal I prepare.

I do look at meta PvE guides and parses for inspiration. As I only play ESO solo however, aside from the occasional BG, I substitute the Trial sets with sets I can either craft or farm on my own and more often than not slot The Ring of the Pale Order. I also swap some skills around so that I have access to a heal, Major Resolve, and both Major Brutality/Sorcery and Major Savagery/Prophecy (because I prefer to use the Crown Potions ZOS keeps handing out instead of relatively expensive Weapon Pots to get those buffs).

Hence all of my builds end up as way crappier versions of the meta builds I turned to for inspiration.

mostly use my own custom builds

depending on the toon, some of those borderline a meta build (my primary dps for trials is pillar + whorl + stormfist with maelstrom bow back bar), and others are quite a bit off meta

I play a 5 front/5 back setup with a mythic and a monster set right now. The back bar set is purely offensive, but carries over to my front bar. I have low stam with high sustain and use stam damage skills, and high mag with low sustain for more damage and a deep trick bag of utility. I accumulate as much defense and sustain as I can without making a defense or sustain decision. The result is a melee gank build that doesn't run dry outside of heavy pressure and is healable. This build has:

7k weapon damage before a certain set kicks in after my ultimate

26k pen (with debuffs) before "..."

220% crit damage in cp

~40% crit chance

27k health and 27k magicka with a dynamic stamina pool

25k spell resist/24k armor with resolves no bias towards magic or physical. 3k more on my back bar.

both breaches, both resolves, snare cleanse, burst heal and hot

The cumulative effects of a million little bonuses keeping me alive and topped off between fights.

Ooh where to start, my characters are theme based. All of them are using Telvanni Efficiency so I don't have to repeat that with each one. All my hybrids are boring with Stonekeeper helm, Baron Zaudrus shoulders, and Hist Whisperer for Tri-stats all around. All stamina characters have Swarm Mother helm and Domihaus shoulder for the double magicka/stamina 1pc unless otherwise stated. I'm using a lot of Maelstrom Arena sets.

Magicka Nightblade: Crafty Alfiq, Valkyn Skoria
Stamina Necromancer: Syvarra's Scale
Magicka Necromancer: Diamond's Victory, Molag Kena

Arcanists are still below level. No Mythics because I don't have the attention span to grind Excavation(3) and Scrying(4).

Main enjoyment of the game has always been custom builds taken into pvp, usually battlegrounds builds.

Winterborn is a bit of a long time fav set from the sound effect. Been happily using it again with arcanists imperfect ring delayed damage morph for some nice delayed burst

for vet trials, the builds will tend to be pretty close to "meta" because vet trials are usually a min-max situation
for everything else, ymmv...

Way off meta. Like, as far away from meta as the sun is from Earth. Didn't choose custom build because I just stick with skills and sets I enjoy using.

The division always sounded strange to me, like how people get the idea going strictly non meta (in PvE) or just stick with something that's considered meta rn at the moment and stop with that (meaning one setup that's performs best on a dummy situation current patch).

I treat gear as a set of tools. For one thing I've picking one combo, for another one completely different setup and so on. It's still probably a meta approach (because min-maxing) but in a sense that's just picking right things for right scenarios, which also depends on players personal abilities, weaknesses etc. which is different from player to player.
