The damage shield is good. so is the extra 3 tics on the other morph. But the interrupt immunity is completely useless outside pvp fights in close quarters. It's good there for the most part, but since you're not immune to crowd control, you'll still get gimped in most encounters. Which is a shame. Its dps is pretty good on the trial dummy, but in practice in PVE, its pretty low since it relies on you to never get interrupted which happens often.
I noticed the same in solo PvE. Not only is the immunity apparently tied to the shield, but:
- I believe the damage of the skill only starts a second after casting. Maybe the shield too.
- Either way NPCs frequently stun you right after you've cast the skill.
- Many NPCs just don't respect CC immunity. Worst are titans, who stun you all the time (unless maybe you perma-block).

Niche skill? It's pretty much the required skill if you are going to play Arcanist successfully and "as intended" by the devs. I've seen complaints about people not happy with Arcanist because they can't seem to create a successful build without using Fatecarver. When the overwhelming majority of your damage comes from one skill, and many other skills are designed to contribute to that skill, yeah... it's not a niche skill, but a required one.

I think this was WHY they added it in the first place, because of the complaint about how useless Fatecarver was in PVP.

I think the issue is lack of alternatives for damage-dealing crux-spenders.
The only other one is Tentacular Dread, which just doesn't deal enough damage. Maybe it could be improved by getting a DoT effect per Crux spent and helping with recovery, since I think (not sure) it would make your rotation a lot more expensive to cast than Fatecarver.
