Cannot summon a companion in combat

When in combat I can summon a merchant, a banker and probably an accountant too.

The only time I may actually need a companion is in combat, and cannot summon them. Why?

A companion does influence your combat ability. And the game doesn't allow "changes" to your combat abilities during combat. (You can't change equipment, skills, or CP, either.) So if you started the combat without a companion, you can't summon them as an afterthought.
And if you did start combat with them, and they die, they have a resurrection mechanism like players. If you were allowed to summon them during combat you could circumvent that mechanism by unsummoning and resummonign them.
I guess those are the reasons why.

If yours was a rhetorical question to state that you'd prefer they were just summonable anyway, please forgive my ramblings and carry on. ;)

It was rhetorical, appreciate the theory though, but the changes in combat in and of itself is not a reason to block it, if I forget my food or it is running out I can re apply mid fight which is more valuable than a companion.

Makes sense to block an unsummon or summon a different one mid fight though.

Well blocking the unsummoning of my companion when I forget to rotate my quick slots and accidently unsummon when I go for a potion. lol

It would make reviving them pointless as it would be faster and easier to desummon-summon.

It think it could be for scenario like this
    Oh no! Bastian died!
    Proceed to summon Mirri
    Oh no! Mirri died!
    Proced to sommon Ember.
Repeat until all companion are dead or fight ended

Just give me 3 active at once. Azandar, Ember, and Sharp-as-Night; everything will be dead within a minute.

Oddly enough, you are allowed to recharge your weapon(s) and repair your armor during the heat of combat-- if you can stay alive while doing so. It seems like those things could have an effect on combat, too.

EDIT: But please note, I am NOT asking for those two things to be taken away! Many's the time I've paused in the middle of a fight to repair my gear or recharge my weapon.

I'd guess you can refresh enchantments and armor "under fire" because you already defined them beforehand. But you can't change armor or glyphs at this time.
Of course your companion dying on you (opposed to being freshly summoned in) would be equivalent to this, but they are treated as group members, not equipment, so you can't "recharge" but have to resurrect.
At least that's how I think it's supposed to be looked at.

Agreed with the OP, sometimes companions just vanish for no reason. And I only notice after engaging combat.

Another solution, which I have posted before, would be to have an option to let the game auto-summon the last used companion. So if for some reason it disappears, it is resummoned.

It isn't entirely for no reason, but it is unexpected if it occurs and you get no warning. There is one part of the Eastmarch Public Dungeon where you loose the companion also, but I still haven't figured out why there. Usually, it is because a part of a quest is forced to be pure solo. Or you gain a quest NPC that already fights with you.

The only time I've had a companion disappear is when I've gone swimming... and after coming out of the water, sometimes they don't reappear. That, as I recall, is the only time I've had them just disappear... except when a quest requires you to go solo. I found that happen in the Necrom main story, the final fight my companion just disappeared... not dead, their ultimate still on my UI, but they were not around. Completed the fight and companion reappeared.
