Or basically a category of companion that is an attack-pet.

As to pulling resource away from other areas, not if they build it in to their future content as a matter of course. At best it’s a little jigging…remove certain abilities here, tweak others there.
Non-humanoid companions would of course have to forgoe the standard arsenal that humanoid companions enjoy, but could instead gain an additional default skill-line ability giving similar weapon dmg values as to what you would get from having a particular weapon type equipped.
As to armour, you could retain the existing configuration but tweak it so that the cosmetic aspect suited.

You called them an attack-pet which is basically a summon by your definition. Semantics aside, I just think this is unnecessary and I'm personally not a fan of the idea.
I'd be fine with non-humanoid companions after some toggle is implemented to ban unwanted creatures from sight, at least out of combat.
i doubt non humanoid companions will happen. you can't make outfits for them and they wouldn't be able to use weapons
How would companion gear work? Weapons? Skills?
If you want a pet you have the option to pick a class that has them in their arsenal.
I haven't played Necrom yet (xbox) but if it's a popular quest companion in-game then they may make them a house guest like they did with Arox.
