Option for skills to fire when you press them

Same as above, I want an option in the settings for skills to fire off when I press the button instead of taking my finger off of the key. ESO is the only mmo like this and it frusterates me.

thats not how it works ingame. Test for yourself. For example, use uppercut and bind it to 2. When you press 2 nothing happens until you take your finger off the button

I use a controller so there are two functions for each key, Press and Hold have two different actions. Left joystick press is mount up while holding it down puts me in crouch. Right joystick press is Weapon Swap, holding it down opens my map.

I just tested this and yea, the skill doesn't fire until you release the key. I am so used to just quickly hitting and releasing in one motion I never noticed before.

I am not sure why it's this way either but I support having them fire when pressed. That would make more sense in my opinion.

yea or at least a toggle to choose whether you want it on press or on release

OP lets say this option were implemented and you enabled it. How would ESO register a HA for you, or any other channeled ability for that matter?
A HA is registered when a listener class notes the onKeyDown event but does NOT act on it - it merely notes it, waits for the follow up onKeyUp event, measures the intervening duration and then assigns a strength value to that HA.

If the duration between the onKeyDown and onKeyUp events is near instantaneous, a LA is registered.
Charged/channeled abilities functionality (such as ESO's with its HAs, etc) is built on listener classes noting but not acting on initial onKeyDown events.

If all ESO had was LAs and primitive abilities (no charged/channeled abilities), then your request would be easy enough to accommodate.
Disclaimer though: I know nothing of ESO's inner workings, so the request may still be possible to implement.

If this system were in place, It's not clear just how ESO would go about registering a HA or any other channeled ability for that matter.

If all ESO had was LAs and primitive abilities (no charged/channeled abilities), then an activate on the onKeyDown system would be easy enough to accommodate.

xD Me too. Then I read the explanation, and that explains SO many things sometimes. Like in a high stress situation you press the button too fast for the game to recognize if you are holding or pressing fast.

if they keep it as it the game should at least tell players abilities fire when you take your finger off

It is strange, but it rarely comes up as a problem unless you have heavy hands. I think the reason they do this is so you can't press and hold the button to just perfectly cast the same ability over and over again.

I actually use it to queue up skills/HA. Like for a dizzy swing I want to follow up with an HA, I hit DS and release quickly, then hold down for the left mouse button as the DS goes through it's animation. As soon as the DS goes off, I release the mouse button and it now hits as HA instead of an LA, which it would have been if the skill went off when you pressed the button.

Doubtful as I expect a macro can work around this easily but setting a macro per key that releases automatically.

And BGs. I came here ready to complain how I have to press a key 5 times to get no effects and ended up learning something new.

I would agree with this being added to ESO, this has been an option in WoW for many years. Most ESO players (that I personally know anyway) use keybinds, not clicks, so this option would really only alter light attacks and heavy attacks, or those players who do click abilities and don't use keybinds.

The heavy attack problem is perhaps solved by adding logic along the lines of "if the mouse button is not released within X number of ms of being pressed, delay firing the skill until the button is released again, or after a set time limit is reached."

I'm not sure how many ms it takes to click a mouse button, or to release it. But I do know that the difference between a 110k parse and a 135k parse on, e.g. stamsorc is approximately 500-600 ms. (weave average 1.0sec vs weave average 0.4sec) The average human's eye blink speed is around 300 ms, by way of comparison.

Besides, as a fully optional feature, this could be simply left as it currently works now, for those who run heavy attack builds or need to weave heavy attacks into their rotation for resource sustain or to maintain uptimes on certain buffs/debuffs.

yea, it its a gameplay design choice, the game should at least tell players in the tutorial that abilities fire when you release them

Pretty sure they could just code LA and HA to function different from abilities. It wouldn't have any effect on channeled abilities because they don't need to be held down anyway so that's confusing why someone made it out like having it fire when you pressed it would have any effect on channeled abilities

Unfortunately, this wouldn't work because of how the engine resolves target listeners within the dynamic object map using a post-process keyhash at the input level.

Does that make sense? I just made it up but I think it has promise

I'd like option to have bar swap (and so many other things) reliably happen when I press/tap/ hit/desperately smash the assigned key once. Oakensoul is nice to have but it's not the solution for everything.
