So often I'm roving around and I spot a chest or pjijic portal loot, and there are enemies around, and while I'm defeating them, someone comes along and takes my loot. Very rude ya think?

Chests are inexcusable, but unless the person has started the Psijic skill line, all they see is a rune node (I think). I know that I've been grouped with my wife and she sees a portal and I see a node, but that is anecdotal and not factual, so take it with a grain of salt.

I didn't know that about the portal loot. I'm not so concerned about those or nodes. But with the chests....sigh. And I've been noticing it happening A lot more lately.

Loot is loot. Even if it was an ore node, I'm going to get that after I beat those adds. Swiping it is weak

Not saying taking it is okay, just saying that some people don't see a portal. I'm very much in the camp of "if they are fighting for it, it's theirs" even if it's like a patch of butterflies or torchbugs. It's obviously important enough for them to go and get it, so they should have it.

I usually stand right by the chest. Most of the time, people get the hint and keep moving. If someone manages to stay out of the combat and take the chest while I am busy, oh well. There are more chests.

In all cases, it is not "my loot" until I actually take it. Then it becomes mine.

I don't take chests if the person is standing next to it. But I will if they just are afk for a while after I gave them a a bit, regardless if they get into combat after I started heading towards it. I give afkers a minute and then it's mine. I also will take it if we both obviously see it at the same time (because then you didn't get to it first) or they are fighting far away from it (because I take that as indication you don't notice or care).

In the years I have been playing, I've only seen a negative reaction to his ruleset twice. However, I think I gave that person a fair chance to indicate to me they wanted the chest and had gotten to it first.

Twice I've had a player jump on a chest after a failed attempt on my part. So now I don't use the quick pick if I think others might be around.

That happened to me the other night-- I was picking the lock (so I'd get XP from it) and another player leapt down so he could immediately grab the chest if I failed, which of course is what happened. It wouldn't have bugged me so much except it was a master chest and all I'd been getting that night were easy chests.

How would they know you are fighting enemies for a nearby node? Many players, myself included, just fight enemies on the way from point A to point B, with no intention of looting the area's junk. Anyone is free to take the nodes or chests.

I either join in killing the mob then wait to see if they take the node or I watch as they kill then see if they take the node. I know it is a free for all out there but as they were in the vicinity first I let them have the node.
The message that started this conversation mentioned chests. With chest it is safe to assume they are there for the chest.

I was standing by it. But, in any case, I would have rathered the person help with the enemy, and maybe it wouldn't have irked me so. I leave simple and some intermediate chests alot for others that may need it, like if lower player. I just think going right for it while you were obviously going to, is a bit sneaky is all.

I also noticed such rude behaviour. But also this, when I try to pick a lock in a chest and some other player already takes position over me waiting for me to fail on picking lock. If that happens they imediately take over the lock, when I need to wait for another try and I loose that chest. Also very rude.

Because of this I usually try a way to open chests in hostile area, having the Legerdemain Locksmith IV that "Improves your chances of forcing locks by 70%", one can try quickly (or slowly in stealth) approach the chest from a less spottable side, then try forcing lock before the mobs see me and turn hostile, which probably takes ca.1-2 sec.

Another way is to use range attack on the mobs to drag them away of chest, when we run a longer way around that place and while returning to chest we have "force lock" available for few seconds. If I didn't get hit while the mobs are out of their effective range, I can force lock even when mobs are still hostile and chasing (red dots on compass).

It worked for me many times, but on fast character (stamplar all medium).

Send in your companion to distract the mob(s), as long as you don't get hit yourself you can interact with the treasure chest.

Happened to me yesterday with a thieves trove when I was on a baby dragonknight I created just to play with the class a bit. I was in one of the starter areas (Stros M'kai), killed the mobs right next to the trove, and as soon as they were down another player moved in and grabbed the trove.

I did think that it would be a very poor introduction to the ESO community if my level 6 dragonknight had belonged to a new player. The player who moved in on the trove had a companion and was higher level, so they knew exactly what they were doing. As someone else said, pretty petty.

Not everyone stops to open chests, either. There was a time a while back when such things were "unfashionable" around here because, purportedly, the chests don't contain anything worth the effort to open. The monsters guarding the chest might be more valuable to some people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I still stay away from the chests if someone is near, but it would not surprise me they were not interested in the chest.

    I got that this week.

Was some mobs guarding a Psijic portal, so I tried to grab it and they aggroed. Started fighting them and a player ran up and grabbed it while I was fighting, mounted up, and rode off.

I wanted to be mad, but instead it made me appreciate the nice people out there who I knew would have left it for the one who found it. So I thank them for helping me not take kindness for granted.

I believe the debate over to whom the loot belongs misses the point. If someone's moving to grab a node or chest, it's basic civility to let them do that (though if you both head towards the goody at around the same time, it's fair game to grab it). If they're fighting mobs around a node or chest, it's reasonable to assume they're after the loot. Every now and then I join a fight near a chest and I too wait for a while to see if the other player's after it.

Desync, I think. The node was taken by someone earlier, but the client and server are not synced, so when you try to take it, the server brings the client up to speed. Then, the client lets you know the bad news.

I used to get annoyed by this, and I still think it’s the polite thing to wait to see if the person who was there first will want the node or chest.

Six years in, I figure if they are so desperate for it as to try to take it first despite not being there first, they probably need its contents a lot more than I do.
