Daily Alchemy Writs vs. Mudcrab Chitin

The alchemy daily crafting writs includes 2 tasks:
1) crafting the potion with certain ingredients.
2) acquiring (or having) 3 of a certain resource.

I had understood that the ingredients for the potion are consumed, but not the one that is to be acquired, that one would just need to be available. However, over time, my quantity of mudcrab chitins kept decreasing and I have been wondering how they disappear until earlier today: 3 pieces were consumed together with the daily writs. And that's a surprise to me because other ingredients that I have in small amount (less than 10) don't seem to decrease over time, although they're also of the type to be acquired.

So, all in all, now I'm confused, and that's my question: For daily alchemy writs, are the 3 pieces of resource to be acquired also consumed atop of the ingredients of the recipe? Or not?

Thank you :)

    Yes, they've always been consumed.

Indeed, it's the main reason certain alchemy ingredients are scarce and expensive.

It's also the main reason I slaughter peace-loving mudcrabs.

    Enchanting writs work similarly.

Yes they've always been consumed when doing daily writs.

This is why I'm often short of mudcrab chitin too (and violet coprinus). I do sometimes go mud crab hunting, especially if there's an endeavour for killing things with weapon or class skills but I'll also buy it if I notice I've run out.

Thanks for this confirmation. Strange is that I didn't notice that for other resources else than the chitin. Will take care at next one tomorrow.

The other resources are also either potential rewards on the writ reward box, or stuff you get from surveys. So your stash of those resources tend not to decrease over time as much.
Mudcrab chitins do not drop from either the reward boxes, or surveys. So that stash decreases over time.

This here. I've just resorted to buying a stack once a year or so. The other dailies items are just found here and there from various sources.

Depending on the day, the price and hiw you make your potion, you can have a financial loss of up to 5k gold per alchemy writ. Probably even higher. 🤯

    Mat prices are crazy high.
If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.

Once I realised what the daily writs needed, I created a text file on my PC to track them all, then started farming for the required alchemy materials. I now have all of these on at least 200, enough to cover the writs for over a year (I only do the writs on 1 character, btw), and I keep an eye on the numbers and do some more farming as needed.
I also changed the way I use the map filters. I keep only a few filters permanently enabled, e.g. chests. Then when I'm farming for a material, I enable the fiiter for that material, and go where the map indicates it's located, e.g. when farming violet coprinus for the alchemy daily writs, I enable the 'mushrooms' map filter.
