    Hmm...which Elder Scroll?

I've heard some are practically unreadable, so I'm not sure they'd translate well.

Can't recall any good precedent of something similar turned into series and being not even good, but even watchable.

A TV version of The Real Barenziah would probably work. Personally, I'd like to see one on the Firsthold Revolt.

Some, in the Lore there are many stories that you can use to make a series.

Creating a worthy story from a game has seen abysmal results. The Last of Us is an example of good adaptation from a game but it is mostly using the story from the game instead of having to create one. Warcraft: The Begining is an example of a poorly done adaptation to the screen. One has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% but the one that had to be more creative with putting together an actual story has a Rotten Tomato score of only 29% showing how much it sucked.

Since ESO does not have such a great story that would make sense for TV or the bigger screen it does not sound like a great idea to try.

Generally, converting games to movies/television shows runs into issues because as a medium their strengths and weaknesses don't totally align.

Story heavy games without much choice or gameplay focus can transfer over but, I'd argue those games aren't really doing a great job of being games in the first place.

I think you could do some really cool things visually with the Elder Scrolls Universe and we already see a degree of this in the various trailers for the game.

With that said, you'll notice in the trailers that the faces of the various characters don't always look quite right. In short action heavy clips this isn't a big deal but, in a longer project this could be a problem.

You'd also hit the issue that the Elder Scrolls series has a bunch of different layers that you can frequently try to follow or ignore in many of the games. On the surface level, it is kind of like your garden variety Fantasy but then when you go a bit deeper it quickly becomes quite dark and if you dig deeper still it turns out the Elder Scrolls Lore goes really deep.

This presents a challenge for when you transfer mediums as you aren't really going to be able to offer all of the levels at once in a way where the deeper layers can be ignored. If you don't go very deep, you'll annoy those that care about the deeper levels and if you do you'll likely turn off people that aren't as interested or down right turned off by the deeper stuff. I personally quit playing the Elder Scrolls games for over a year after I read the Keyes books because I hated them so much.

I think overall it probably isn't a good idea.

Going along with the common assumption that this is asking about a TV show set in the Elder Scrolls universe my answer is the same as last time this came up. I think using it as the setting for an original story could work, but adapting any of the games directly would not.

As other people have said there's a big difference in story telling techniques between a game and a TV show or movie. The obvious one is the amount of time available, but according to discussions between writers for different media I've read there's a lot of smaller things as well, including things the viewer or player isn't normally aware of, like using the camera in a TV show to frame a scene and control what the viewer focuses on vs. needing to give the player control of it and prioritise seeing where they're going in a game which necessitates using different techniques to draw your attention. Apparently experienced writers in one medium will struggle to write for the other because all the techniques they're used to relying on won't work there.

(It can happen between game genres as well. I can't find it now but I read an article years ago about level designers used to carefully placing objects around a room for environmental storytelling having to be told RPG players won't get the full effect because they'll take everything which isn't nailed down before they've looked around the whole scene. It also specifically called out Elder Scrolls players as the ones who will bring a hammer and take the nails too.)

Anyway, to adapt an Elder Scrolls game for TV you'd have to make too many changes. Apparently Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim take 30-45 hours to beat, just doing the main story (100% completion is hundreds of hours) so even if you cut everything else out you'd have to cut more to fit it into one season (and they're unlikely to be immediately signed off for 2 or more). But then they may need to add in some lore which isn't explained in the main story but is relevant to it so viewers who didn't play the games can follow the story, and something else will need to be cut to make room for it...

Then you end up with something which automatically gets bad reviews just for being too different to the game and existing fans don't want to watch it.

An original story written for TV would work much better I think. It could include all the elements which make up an Elder Scrolls story, but tailored to the medium and therefore avoiding all the problems with an adaption. I'm not saying it's a guaranteed hit, there could still be problems with writing, pacing, budget, bad acting etc. (I mean look at the old Dungeons & Dragons movie - that was adapted from literally a set of tools for story telling and it was terrible.) But I think an original story would work better.

I think any expansion of the game universe further to art space does nothing bad.
If it went well with lore and common idea of the universe, we would get a great piece of art picturing the things we love.
If it went bad, well... one more fanfic doesn't spoil the whole universe.

I would watch what people can do with it. Independently of what it would be: fairy tale about heroic fight against daedra princes, epic battle screen about three banners war or a disaster movie "Imperium and the daedric gates".
It is always interesting how people of art see the game you played, even if their attempt doesn't fit with my understanding of how it works.

Of practical thoughts, successfull movie or series would attract money to the whole franchise. That means futher expansion, more media... maybe even Bethesda-land theme park opening with M'aiq and uncle Sheo mascots at the entrance.

I don't think it could be done. Too much content for a TV show. So much content would have to be cut it wouldn't turn out well.

The problem I can see is that it would need to have incredibly good CGI & Practical effects (which also means an incredibly high budget).

From my experience, the shows that turned out to be the greatest ones, are the shows which had extremely well designed & established world building. Because that made them feel believable. Shows like GoT or The Expanse for example. Both are based on the source material that already existed (books).

So, in order for the Elder Scrolls series to work - it would need to be done with an extreme care to world building. All races, all provinces, all cultural things and religious things would need to be there. If you see a Khajiit in a tavern or Argonian traveller in Elder Scrolls world - it is not something extraordinary, but rather something common. The Series would need to replicate that 1:1. Otherwise it will be another generic fantasy show.

Elder Scrolls has so many stories that could be turned into movie(s) or a tv series without even a need to try to adapt a game it’s crazy.

    - Story around Tiber Septim
    - The Night of Tears and the 500 returning
    - The Dragon War
    - Story around Alessia and getting free from Ayleids
    - The Dwemer vs Nords/Dunmer that led to them vanishing, they were also fighting a war against Falmer too then

And so many more options. TES lore is pretty deep.

I also want to add, that back in the early days of video game movies, a lot of people making those adaptions weren't familiar with the material they were adapting. Many of them didn't even play video games. Video game adaptations have come a long ways since the 90s Mario movie.
