Why can't players stand on top of buildings

I noticed when I try to make my character jump onto the roof of any building, she immediately slides and falls off.

In other online games, my characters all can run around, jump on to, and stand on top of the roofs of buildings just fine.

PvP will be even more fun if players can hide on the rooftops, jump from one building to another, and snipe enemy players from the top of any building.

Elderscrolls will be a lot more exciting and fun if players can run around on the roofs of buildings.

This is both a suggestion for and a question about the game.

My question is why should they be able to when any rooftops that are meant to be accessible already are? Ganking is already a controversial topic and hiding on top of buildings would likely make camping/ganking even worse. There's already a thread lamenting people running around towers in PVP making capturing keeps more difficult and I don't think hiding on rooftops would make capturing keeps any more engaging and would likely result in a stealther sitting on a roof that people cannot reliably get to preventing keeps from being captured. Personally I don't see anything but negatives coming from allowing people to get onto roof tops that aren't meant to be accessed.

Probably the same reason you hug the side of a cliff, drop over 100 meters, and take no fall damage. Magic!

While some players may find the sight of players running around on rooftops "exciting and fun", I can assure you that many others - me included - will find it irritating and totally immersion-breaking.

Why can't we turn while standing in place? Why can't our mounts walk backwards?

This game is a lot harder to parkour in, and a lot harder to find seams and footholds to get to places you aren't meant to.

In DAOC I managed to find ways to get on top of nearly inaccessible rooftops on the PvP server. In classic Everquest I found a way to get on top of the walls of East, West and North Freeport and my wizard had great fun nuking people from up there. But it was not good for the game. Good for me, not good for the game lol.

Some of the barriers the devs put in this game make no sense but it is what it is.

Well the current system doesn't stop players going on roof tops, it just means they slide unrealistically off instead of jumping down.

Spend some time around the stable in the centre of Daggerfall, just below the blacksmith stations and you'll see several people jump onto the stable roof and slide off instead of following the road down.

You can see people jumping their mounts onto the top of the blacksmith "tower" in the center of Vivec City. I find it a bit silly.

That's nothing. You should see some of the places I was able to get in Star Trek Online, like outside the space station looking in.

I enjoy silliness like that in games. I spend more time than I should in ESO looking for weird places to jump and climb.

I would guess it has something to do with combat design in the game. There were dungeons where you could jump up on rocks or other structures and attack while taking no damage. Making it so our characters slide off those structures is what insures we fight as intended instead of cheesing it.
